Hi everyone I'm thinking of buying a 450 or 550 fe in the very near future. can anyone
tell me if the 550 can be converted to a 380? I know you can convert the 450. Is the
550 engine the same as the 450? ( exept for barrel size ) The reason i'm thinking of the
380 is because most of my riding is greenlaneing and so power is not an issue. Do any
of you have a preference for either model and has anyone had any experience of the
380. Thanks for any replies. Casey.

there was a 380 for sale at midwest's last week. someone called me for my opinion on it. excellent bike and all you'll ever need.

the bore and stroke of the two is essentially
450=100 by 60
550=100 by 70

the 450 barrel is taken down to 92mm for the 380 so it knocks about 70 off the 450 and about 82 off the 550 and will still be too much for you. be patient and buy the real thing. or get a 450 and mod it.

i have a 95mm barrel here that could be used making it about 400cc.

was it some bloke called tony who was also looking at a 400?

Hi guys thanks for your replies,it was me who rang you about the 380 Taffy and the 400
Cypher and I'd just like to say thanks for your advice and time you were both more than
helpfull.I had a look at the 380 at Midwest and though the bike was fairly tidy it was
more than I wanted to pay ( again very helpful guys there ).I've pretty much decided
that I would like a post 04 bike due to the fact that on pre 04's the stators seem to
go at regular intervals and I don't like the thought of spending £700 if the coil gives up
the ghost, unless of course you guys can convince me that pre 04 bikes are an ok buy.
Like I said to you both I've liked husabergs for a long time and its when not if I buy one.
Thanks again.Casey.

had a look at that '03 400 that was on ebay after you rang, look really tidy, if it had been closer i might have been tempted.

lets be clear here casey, i said that the reconditioned stators are a 100% cure and they have a diode controlling the voltage. the stator to watch out for is the electrex - it's becoming clear that they can cause unsolicited voltage that may damage the coil. the coil - when i went to get one from holland was £700. in the UK, i'll find out but they will be less. but the coils very rarely go and at the moment bikes are being broken at the same speed as coils are being required.

an '02 or an '03 400 are great little bikes sorted. i have just done one right through for a man in chipping sodbury, if you call me again i'll give you his details. he is off to australiia (his visa came through this week) and he wants to go this month. melbourne i think. "the place at the bottom".

i did the full works to that and he has ridden it once since. starts first kick and at the touch of a button.

regards

Taffy
