I have been following the "locking front brake" thread where there is a ton of great brake fluid info and since i am thinking about it, i had wanted to change my front brake fluid but on the master cylinder cap it reads 3÷5 brake fluid is recomended? it plain as day says "3÷5", i have never heard of anything like this, i was just going to use dot 4 since i have left over from my rear brake but thought i would ask for ideas before i melt the seals out of my master due to using something incompatible with my system, anybody have any experince with dot 3÷5 fluid or using a substitute and having good long term results?

Use DOT 4. my cap says the same thing but on my swing arm in the rear it says ( use dot 4). in the husaberg manual they tell you to use DOT 5.1 and never use dot 5.

I don't see any benifits in using Dot 5.1, I find it just costs more. I replace my fluids 2 a year with DOT 4 and have had no problems on any of my bikes in the past.

The best thing to do would be to check with the manufacturer of the brake system. Some brake systems cannot use dot 3 or 5 because they contain silicone and will break down the seals in the brake system. (dot 5 is purple in color. Not sure if dot 3 is as well.) Also, if you plan on changing fluids (dot 4 to 5.1 for example) be sure to completely flush the system as some brake fluids cannot be mixed.
