well i've gone and put a deposit down on a 1 owner 2006 450.

had quite a good go on it on some fast bits plus more importantly some trials type going.

was actually a bit of an eye opener, there was more of a difference between the 450 and the 400 than i imagined and whilst my 400 wasn't tuned apart from the different carb everyone who had a go said it went well.

the only bike i've ridden to compare it with was an 05 ktm sx 450. certain theres more go than the last ktm i rode which was a 06 450 exc.

i'll have to be gentler with the throttle than the 400 defo.

so what is the difference? i think it slipped through the gap there somewhere!

regards

Taffy

no slipping, just after only an 3/4 of an hours riding all your going to have are my initial impressions of a bike in the dry, where to be honest most bikes feel good.

these are that the bike was used by an expert class rider, told that as he rode for the dealer, and was obviously set up for him as the engine certainly has some serious go.

seems taller than the old bike but lighter.

suspension is sweet but will need to put my springs in it.

has a small tank and the steering feels very light.

movement forwards on the bike is effortless and the front wheel sticks like glue due to a combination of the tank, different triple clamps and probably the springs being a bit soft for me.

don't think i'll get away giving this big hand fulls of throttle like i did the 400.

once i've got it and been out on it a few times i'll know more

fraser, the differences i noted going from my 98 fe400 to the 04 450 was the quickness at lower revs. granted a lot of the difference is due to the fcr carb, but the short stroke is very noticeable. there appears to be a jerkier approach to mid speed cruising. i attribute that to the short stroke. i have developed a new style of riding with this bike which is a series of short bursts of a lot of throttle rather than the smoother roll-on of the 400. thats probably why the center knobs on the trials tire went away so fast. i found that riding in the same areas that i had put in a lot of time on the 400 required a 1t smaller countershaft sprocket (14-13). it still has the forgiving grunt that the 400 had, but not quite as cadillac smooth. it doesn't seem to stall any easier than the 400. but it sure does rip when you want it to. tips the scale at 253# full of fuel (stock tank). you'll love it!
