Hi all,

Can any body tell me if it is just a simple bearing, dust seal and spacer replacement to convert from 20mm to 26mm wheel spindle size.

Regards

Sparks.

for the wheel it normally is on the bikes i've seen people do.
will the lower fork clamps that hold the spindle need changing though?

If you want to use a front wheel with 26mm front axle on an older bike the easiest way is to make a new set of wheel spacers with 20mm hole instead of 26mm.

FSF is correct--to use a 26mm wheel on a 20mm fork, you have to machine up new wheel spacers. You want them to externally be identical to the new-style spacers, but with the ID of the old axle.

If you were going the other way (20mm to 26mm) there is a factory kit, just a set of spacers really, that adapt the old wheel and axle to the 26mm forks.

If you want to convert a 20mm spindle bike to 26mm can you bore out the lower fork clamps to the larger spindle sizes?

I think you'd be the first if you tried....it's a huge difference between the two sizes, comparatively, and that's one area you really don't need a catastrophic failure.

Hi john3,

Regarding the second part of your post this is the way I want to go, I have an 04 and am after a set of motard wheels, so as long as the OD of the wheel bearing is the same I can use my bearings spacers and seals, the reason I say my is because they are all new.

Hi Sparks,

Johnf3 s info is spot on- to put an early 20mm axle hub into 26mm forks you will need the 20mm hubbed wheel, a 20mm axle (and nut) and P.NO. SXS 03 540 400 spacer set.

You cannot put a 26mm axle tharogh the 20mm hub- even with a planned bearing swap because AFAIK there are no commercially avail 37mm od X 26mm id bearings available- which would require custom spacers, or 37x30mm bearings because the 26mm axle/bearing combo actually uses a 30mm id bearing with the knock in spacers offering the reduction in dia for the 26mm axle..

If the motard wheels you are getting are 20mm, you are good to go with the spacer kit. You won't be able to use your new bearings, though.

You will need to come up with a 20mm axle and nut, like Ausburg already mentioned.

I am making up a set of Super moto wheels to fit my 03 Berg using a set of 17 inch Cagiva/Aprilia wheels(a lot cheaper alternative to Excel spoked) that have 20mm spindles. The way i am going to try and sort the front is to machine a stepped spindle 26mm down to 20mm ( as mentioned no commercial bearings available) then a split 26mm spacer with locking bolt for the other side, tighten the split side first spin/brake to centre then lock the other side. The rear is already a 20mm spindle so its just a case of making up a spacer kit that centres the wheel. A set of front and rear bearings cost me £15 from www.simplybearings.co.uk so its not worth the hassle of changing bearings between dirt and moto wheels, you will also need to alter the caliper bracket if you plan to use 320mm disc.

I am looking at putting Honda CBR wheels on my 05 Fe550. The wheels fit on a 20m axle but my forks accept a 26mm axle.

Ausberg suggests using a spacer kit (part # SXS 03 540 400) on a 20mm axle to make it fit the 26mm forks.
Anyone know what axle will work for my bike? Simply any 04 or earlier berg or ktm fromt axle?

The other option I am considering is to replace the 6004 (20x42x12mm IDxODxW) bearings in the CBR wheels with 6806 (30x42x7mm) bearings. These bearings are narrower so I would have to double them up (putting two in side by side). Then I could use my 26mm axle if I made spacers to fit.
