2011 FE570 starting problems

Recently I purchased a FE570 with only 6 hours. As I do a lot of remote trail riding I w,anted something I could count on. With the bike being like new and having fuel injection, I assumed it would be very reliable.

I've now taken it out 4 times and have had to be towed 3 of those times. The first couple of times it would die and then not stat for awhile. Thinking it was the fuel pump I had a new fuel pump installed,(KTM gave me a new pump but required a dealer to install), and at the same time the tech made sure the injectors and screen were clean.

Think this solved the stalling problem as it hasn't quit on me since the new pump. Now, the problem is that it is difficult to start or won't. When I turn it over it seems to sputter and backfire then may or may not start. I checked the voltage on the battery and it is 12.4 cold and 10.4 under load of cranking the starter. I think those are normal although the battery, (stock), does seem to go dead pretty quick.

I love the way the bike rides but I've lost confidence in the bike to take it out. I guess the only other thing I would know to do is try and replace the battery but I'm afraid I'm just grasping at any possible solution. The closet dealer is 2 1/2 hours and I really hate the thought of the hassle and cost of taking it to them.

Any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
 
filter

Check if you have a small filter in the fuel hose where it connects to the injector. If so try without.

I assume the filter you are referencing is actually in the hose? This may sound stupid, but is there anyway of determining if I have this filter without taking off the line? Without taking off the hose, there doesn't appear to be a filter going into the injector.

There is a filter in the line approximately half way between the injector and tank. It looks aftermarket to me.

I had similar problems. It would crank over but not fire and would run the battery down quickly. Get some jumper cables and try to boost it with another battery. I did this and it fired up straight away, then i knew my battery was the problem. Changed the battery and havent had a worry since! These bikes need a decent battery with enough power to crank the engine and run the injection together.

If only we had a kicker, ha ha!

Before I buy a battery I will try jumping the bike and see if it helps. What kind of a battery did you get? I was planning on buying a Turntec but he went out of business.

This is my first bike without a kick start. With all my starting problems, I've really missed my kick start but my friends who have had to tow me probably miss it even more!
 
My mate put a litium ion battery in his EXC500 and i stole his original one to get me out of trouble, had it for about six months now, ha ha! My plan is to upgrade to a lithium ion battery aswell but am undecided which one to buy, so many varying opinions on which is the best and what is rubbish!
 
That inline filter is probably instead of the filter I was talking about, so if I were you I wouldn't bother opening up to check as you probably do not have that installed.

I suggest you check your battery before you buy a new one. Take it somewhere where they sell batteries and let them check it. If it's bad buy the one the bikes come with, they are good. A lithium battery is lighter but I wouldn't trust them. I did buy a shorai and it lasted less then a year and died for no reason. After reading up it seems like the quality overall isn't that good on lithium batteries, and when they go below a certain voltage they are dead without any way of saving them. In addition the shorai wasn't water proof....
No I recommend you stick to what Husaberg recommends. At least do a proper research on internet and read up on forums before throwing money on a lithium battery..
 
This is why i am unsure which to buy. My mate has a cheapy "no name" unit from ebay and his bike runs a much bigger head light and light bar set up with no hassles, cranks fast and fires straight up ( his is efi too). Guess we will see how long it hangs in for. So many different opinions on so many different brands.

Im wondering if the lithium batteries of today are much better than the ones of yesterday ( using the portable power tool products as an example)?
 
Thanks everybody for your input. I bought a new Shorai battery and it seems to start better. The real test will be when I get into some remote trails.
 
Guess I spoke too soon. Went out to start the bike and it wouldn't start...just backfires and sputters. With my new, expensive battery it did keep cranking.

I'm at wits end regarding what to try next. I hate to take it back to the dealer 3 hours away and spend more money on essentially a new bike. Seems like everything has been done except maybe go back to my carburetor 2 stroke.
 
Well the new battery must work as it cranks over fine plus if it backfires then it must have spark too! There is obviously something else going on here. Your dealer cleaned your injector, etc. Your pump is new and the backfire also proves you have fuel in there. Just wondering about timing or valve clearances? Mapping or maybe a sensor playing up? Im not great with the electrical side of things but others on here are, im sure they can give better advice!
 
My new battery is working great...just that it didn't solve the problem.

Thinking the valves were off I checked them and they were right on spec. Next, I turned my attention to an inline fuel filter. I can't tell that it has any dirt in it but compressed air will not blow through it either way. I'm not an mechanic by any means, but it seems that if compressed air will not go through that it would be difficult for fuel to properly flow through. I'm the second owner so i don't even know for sure it it stock or some aftermarket filter. Does anybody know anything about this filter?

I'm not sure about that particular filter but the one I use on my Berg's are Duralast/Fuel Filter Part Number: FF3330DL from Auto Zone for $5 each.
