My 2010 FE450 is popping and backfiring on deceleration so it is getting the re flash.
Are all the 2010 North American bikes running lean? What has changed since 2009?
Seems like a waste of time to make all bikes not run properly for one state!
It's a big state and the customers there buy a LOT of motorcycles. Green sticker legal almost doubles the sales for Husaberg.
A little information about the Green Sticker thing for those not familiar with the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia. RPK is the king of restrictive environmental laws, this is accomplished through an unregulated governmental board known as CARB, or California Air Resources Board. Every year for as long as I can remember they come out with new "clean air standards" that are more stringent than the prior years, and the EPA.
We have our own special blends of gasoline that change by the season, and it used to be anyway, that a California smog legal car was always more expensive due to extra emission requirements. I must admit, they have accomplished their goal as the air quality here in Southern Kalifornia is exponentially better than it was when I was a kid, heck we haven't even had a stage 1 smog alert here since the early 90's. However, their rules are so stringent that you can non longer convert a dirt bike to a street bike, one of the reasons was that regular plastic gas tanks allow a certain amount of the lighter ends to evaporate through the plastic. ( note: the average car manufactured these days produces 85% less emissions than a car produced 30 years ago)
So several years back, Kalifornia decided that the old Green Sticker off road licensing would take on a new role as an environmental tool. Green sticker bikes had to meet certain emission standards, those that didn't were given a Red sticker. The Green sticker bikes can ride all year round on STATE and FEDERAL lands, while a RED sticker can only ride during certain months of the year, or on private property all year.
And it used to be that as long as your bike was a fourstroke you would pass the emission requirements since they burned so much cleaner than a 2 stroke. However, wtih CARB's ever changing requirements even fourstroke bikes were no longer GREEN STICKER legal. That's why the 08's were not GREEN STICKER legal, b/c they didn't have the coating on the inside of the gas tank.

See the Red Sticker schedule here:

So, if you only ride on private tracks then a red sticker doesn't matter to you. However, if you want to ride in the state OHV parks, BLM land, or a good portion of the National Forest Service land you can only ride there with a Red Sticker from October 1st to April mostly, and some places as late as May. The desert area's don't matter much, way too hot in the summer, but, the higher elevations are very desirable during the summer as it is way cooler up there. There are a couple of easy ways around this RED sticker nonsense, but, it keeps people from buying a bike that can't be ridden whenever they want. Can you say summer vacation with the kids?
And to Clay's point, it is a big state, the most populous in the Union at around 38 or 40 million people. In fact, as a stand alone Economy Kalifornia is the 9th largest economy in the world. Our weather here is great which means that people can always find a place to ride within a couple hours drive.
So there you have it JKL, if you make the bikes Kalifornia legal you can sell a lot of them here and in all the other states too.
