2010 Husaberg FE390 Fueling Issues

I have a 2010 FE390. I love the bike, but I'm having fueling issues. I replaced the spark plug, replaced the fuel injector, replaced the fuel pump filter (pump seems to work fine), replaced the inline filter on the fuel line, and just had the valves inspected (still in spec).

I am still getting some sputtering and stalling when I start the bike cold, and the bike bogs when I turn the last 15-20% of throttle at higher speeds. I also get some pretty significant backfiring after riding for a while. I have toggled through all three of the maps, but the bike seems to be running lean. I just can't figure out where the issue is in the system. I currently have a KTM Power Parts exhaust pipe installed. I have the original pipe from the PO, just never installed it. I wonder if the bike will run better with the stock exhaust?

Does anyone have any advice? I am debating whether, or not, to install one of the JD Jetting Fuel Injector Controller kits to correct the lean issue. Anyone have experience with the JD kit?

Thanks!
Dave

Check the fuel pressure, it should be 48-54 psi. If it's not I guess the fuel pump is at fault. Not uncommon on -09 and -10 models.

If not that maybe you are running stock map in the ECU? If you do find a dealer who can installed the competition map (or a JD kit as you mentioned).

How do you measure fuel pressure? Is there an easy way to do it in the garage, or is that something a mechanic would need to do with specialty tools?

It is possible I have the stock map instead of the race map. I am going to swap the exhaust back to stock and see if things improve.

There are many ways to do it and a mechanic can do it for you but you can do it yourself if you are comfortable with medium difficult repairs.

I personally bought a Harbor Freight fuel pressure testing kit and hooked it up in line to my fuel line. Then I attached the gauge to the side of the shrouds and went riding. I was having a problem where my bike would cut out after 5-10 minutes so I needed to confirm that it wasn't the fuel pressure. It turned out it was the coolant temp sensor.

But I still have the tester and i think it was only 40 or 50 bucks. If you hook it up, just watch the gauge when the bike starts to run poorly and it will tell you.

I'm going to check fuel pressure and TPS tomorrow. Let's hope it is one of the two.

If it is fuel pressure, is the most likely cause the fuel pump? My fuel pump is functioning (I can hear it prime when I tap the start button), and I've already replaced the fuel pump filter. I thought when fuel pumps went it was a catastrophic fail.

Thanks!

Not that I'm an expert in the field Dave but my 570 is running stock map and I've got an aussie made Barrett race type muffler on it, bike doesn't seem to run any different or lean with the different muffler.

It does sound like a lack of fuel issue, as a side check, maybe look at you TPS while you're at it.

I didn't get the fuel pressure or TPS checked, but everything I read points to the fuel pump. I swapped out the exhaust from the KTM Power Parts (FMF) to the stock Husaberg pipe. If anything, it runs the same or slightly worse.

I pulled the fuel pump out and I have a silver fuel pump with a brown cap on top.

Is that the stock fuel pump? I have seen 2011 stock fuel pumps with black cap vs. brown.

If that is the stock pump, I am going to order the CA Cycleworks pump from AOMC.MX.

Thanks,
Dave

OK, so it looks like the problem was the fuel pump. I swapped out the old fuel pump with the CA Cycleworks pump and added the JD Jetting kit. Bike runs GREAT now!

Something I noticed about the JD Jetting Kit: the JD settings that come with the box make it idle a little high, so I now have the idle adjuster turned 15 clicks out instead of the factory recommended 13-14 clicks.

I ran a indicated 93mph with the stock 13-52 gearing and still had power left to go a little faster. I reckon that will be enough speed on the straights during Sandblast 2016. My DR650 only managed 78mph in Sandblast 2015.

Regards,
Dave
