2010 FE390 Fuel Tank Gunk

Hey all, I bought a new 2010 FE390 last summer and noticed some white gunk in the tank but did not know what it was. The 2nd ride in, the bike quit and would not run at all. The dealer found that the fuel filter was plugged with the gunk and replaced it under warrenty. The bike ran for about a week, then quit again, this time the dealer found the filter and injectors were plugged up with the gunk. They replaced both under warrenty and then pulled the tank and pressure washed it out. About 3 months later my fuel pump packed it in, and the dealer looked into it and determend it was because of the strain and dry puming it was doing while the injectors were plugged. After all this was done, the bike ran 100% and had no problems since. In fact i liked the bike so much, that I went and bought a new one. The dealer now removes the tanks and pressure washes them as part of their PDI at the shop. I have had no problems with gunk or fouling in the new bike.

Smart move with your new bike. The white gunk seems to afflict some bikes and not others. Nobody seems to know for sure, but the theory that sounds most likely to me is that it is mold release from the manufacturing process. I checked mine right away, no gunk.

Another smart move along these lines is to add another fuel filter to the line. The stocker is not all that great and there have been instances (as you know all too well) of plugged injectors even absent the attack of the mystery white goo. A 2nd filter will go a long way toward preventing injector issues.

A model that fits the Can-Am quad is popular (I have one on mine). Others have used a filter from NAPA meant for a diesel truck. The main thing is the filter is meant for fuel injection, fits on the 5/16 fuel line. I replaced the quick connects under the tank with the 2nd filter. A bonus of this setup is when you remove the tank, the filter stays in place, always acting as a barrier between the dirty outside world and your sensitive injector. These filters are cheap insurance and a must do mod I think. Here is a pic of mine, complete with redneck engineering wire and rad hose protection mod
