2010 FE 570 Battery Recommendations

It's February in Colorado and I'm already thinking about riding even though it will be a while until i can get into the mountains!

A couple of questions for you experts on here:

First, does anyone recommend a new battery for my bike other than OEM? Looking at a new one and wanted to see what you guys like that have replaced your battery. Secondly, what is the trick to getting the old batter out? Seems like the cover to the battery should come off but a novice like me can't seem to see how to get it off? I have taken the bolts off and unplugged and unhitched the fuse box and so forth.

Second, and this is a little embarrasing but my kickstand threw the spring off with a small curved aluminum piece and a bolt. Trying to see how to put it back on but just don't understand how it goes. Any have a pic of the spring attached they can send me or something?

As you can see, I am not the most mechanically inclined but know there are plenty on here that are and you don't have to tell me twice as I do learn!!!

Regards.

I replaced my battery with a Shorai lithium battery. So far it has been great. It shaved off about 4 lbs weight even with the heavy duty battery with cranking amps. The terminal posts are more solid too. My stock terminals were cracking from the wire vibration.

It is a pain to get the battery out, but it can be done. The service manual shows you how to do it. You basically need to swing a bunch of wires and stuff out of the way.

Yeah there's not a lot of room under the seat but the battery will come out ok with a little effort, I replaced the standard battery in my FE 570, with a lithium Turn Tech light weight battery.
Much more cranking power, less than half the weight of the original & loses 1% of charge per month if un- used compared with approximately 10% loss in normal batteries.
Very, very happy with the performance of the Turn Tech, hear the Shorai's are good also.

I also have the Shorai heavy duty version. Tested it out with two days of -17C. Very good cranking power.

Both days it started at the first attempt, which couldn't be said about a lot of the other euro thumpers! Many were struggling.

Not a 570 I know but I recently went from Yuasa to some import battery which was cheap and pointless to a Moto-Batt unit, did this on both my 550 and my Harley and have found them to be very good and reasonable in price.

Possible worth considering a C-TeK tender at the same time. I've got one for my Berg, Harley and My 950 adventure an dit doesn't matter how long they sit the battery is always in top condition.

Just a thought

I've had two Shorai batteries go bad within a fairly short time. The first in my '10 KTM 990 SMT which Shorai replaced with no questions asked. The second in my '09 Beta 565 RS. Since I have had such good luck with TurnTech batteries i.e. 5 years in my '04 KTM 540 EXC and almost 5 years in my '08 KTM HTR 350 XCF-W and still going strong, I replaced the Beta battery with a TurnTech 5Ah battery. The TurnTech works much better than the 14 series Shorai ever did plus it is much less expensive and assembled in the USA.

Go with Turntech. I also reccomend talking to Joe and having him build you a custom 7.5AH battery over the normally stocked 5AH

I have killed two shorai batterys in a year and a half. They have great warranty support, but when you have a bike that relies on that button you had better have a very good battery. The Turntech 7.5AH is really the smallest battery I would run in these bikes. Honestly, if the battery box was not so limited I would have an even bigger battery in there.

My experience is the larger the battery, the more reliable it will be. It gets stressed way less when trying to crank the bike over.

It is also my experience that you should keep a spare battery on the shelf just in case yours fails because its hard to find anything to replace these in a pinch.

I have had great luck with the stock Yuasa batteries.

I leave my bikes hooked up to a battery tender when not in use and have gotten over 4 years of service life out them. Keeping them on a tender is important no matter what battery you use.

Many stories about the lightweight batteries either dying or shorting out or causing fires.

My Shorai died within one year, one day fine the other a piece of junk. They are also not waterproof. I cant recommend them for a 70 degree as you have no way to know when they might die on you.

I had a Shorai go south on my 300. Worked fine for the first 3/4 of the season then mid ride......nothing. Just dead, not the biggest deal on the smoker of course, but now that I sold the 300 and picked up a used FE450 without a kicker there is not a chance I'd put a Shorai in it. I'll stick to a Yuasa lead acid or maybe give Turntech a try.
