2010 FE 450 - Easiest way to remove the mid header?

Hey guys, I just signed up since I purchased a closeout deal on a 2010 FE 450.
Great bike, but I am having fuel boiling issues also.

I had the 70 degree subtanked installed by the dealer. I personally pulled the tank afterwards and put heat reflective tape on the underside of the tank. Now, I want to wrap the header midpipe. I intend to use the "titanium" type of header wrap material, which is claimed to be the best and doesn't require coating with high heat paint. I also removed the ball from the gas cap check valve per the 70 degree suggestion. The dealer had not done that.

My question is what's the easiest way remove the header mid pipe for wrapping?

It looks as if the main, front gas tank is left in place, but you remove the rear shock and fender/sideplate combo, the header should snake right out. Or will it?

Many thanks!

Hahaha No real easy way about it. But when I wrapped mine I had the main tank off already I pulled the header and then the muffler removed all the subframe bolts and then also had to remove the upper rear engine mount bolt and I removed the rear shock once all of this is removed and the subframe can be moved around enough to get the mid pipe out bearly but its enough

I wrapped the stock mid pipe in place, the tank and shock was off and I removed muffler and head pipe. Then I started wrapping, you should start from the rear and go forward with the wrap, so the seams will be facing rearward. Wetting the wrap does improve the result, but don't start it up inside intially. It will smoke fairly badly the first time it gets hot. Do your best to make sure your layer overlaps the previous and curved sections are challenging. The boss for mounting the pipe will cause some gap, all you can do is try to limit it. The FMF mid pipe has it's own challenges since it is a larger pipe, I wrapped it prior to installing it and had to go through the lowering engine and removing bolts from upper mount to make enough room for install. Also make sure you start bike and let the wrap dry out before putting bike away each time you wash bike. Wet tape setting on the pipe is probably not a good thing. Removing the check ball from cap is not a wise idea, and I doubt you will find any dealer that will do it for you. The potential for raw fuel flowing out and the loss of range if bike lays on side for very long are 2 good reasons not to do it. The whole physics discussion about pressure and boiling points has already been discussed previously and has sound scientific basis behind it. The heat blanket or the foil on tank bottom are another defense against heat, I went with the Moose foil kit and coated whole bottom of tank. The adhesive is ok and you will need to reaply some adhesive from time to time on edges.

The guy who designed the exhausts for our bikes needs to be shot! :cuss:

I was changing today from stock to full FMF ti system. Really thought it would only be around 30-60min job. Most bolts and main header part came off in 15mins. Then the sh*t hit the fan.

Tried to wiggle the midpipe out but no success. Took the shock out, no. Rear brake master cylinder, ehh. Then tank...no. How about engine mount? No!!! Finally ripped the throttle body away and got the stupid pipe out.

So only half of the bike needs be torn down to remove exhaust.

We have three FE570's and I wrapped the mid pipe on all three. With the tank, rear sub-frame laid over to one side and shock off, the mid pipe comes out quite easily. The first time was a bit of a head scratcher but was easy in the end. Installation after wrapping was a bit tight but was OK. I could not explain how to do it as it involves some ritualistic grunting and twisting but it can be done quite easily. A larger diameter mid pipe could be very tough though.

Have fun!!!!

I did it the easy way... I dropped my bike off and they did it. I am sure I could do it but I travel a ton for my job and have little time to ride and less time to wrench. After reading this post I am glad I wimped out! They also threw on the heat blanket on the tank.
