2009 FE450 Inconsistent Spark

I am having trouble with my 450.
It was running fine, then gave up on a ride.
I got it home and started checking.

I have put a new spark plug in and checked the spark under starter motor.
Plug will spark for a bit then stop for a bit, start, stop, start, stop.
You get the picture.

Is this likely to be the cap failure, or should I be looking further.

Thanks.
PB

Measure the resistance of the spark plug cap should be 5 k ohms if you don’t have a meter and want to try to fix it . Take needle nose pliers tug out the threaded lug that that goes on the wire be carful a resistor will come out under tension from a spring . Polish up the nut head put some die electric grease on press the star washers back in with a blunt item . Let us know if this helped

Hey Mate,

Thanks for the reply.

I went back to basics.
Trimed the wire and remounted the cap, and that solved the problem.

I should have done it before I posted, but was having a bit of a heartattack.

Does the plugcap fail often?

Further to that, I found that it was indeed the spark plug cap.
I bought a new one, and have the old one as a spare.

Is there anyway to stop the new one from going the same way?

Yes take the old spark plug cap grab the threaded end that goes on the wire tug it out with pliers it’s held in place with two star washers . Watch the resistor and spring will pop out take the lug polish the nut head up add some die electric grease red assemble super easy no more flame outs . Bet this had members tearing injectors fuel pumps chasing the flame out gremlin .
