2008 fe650 vin not recognized?

I am a California resident, and I am going to check out an fe650 in Oregon.

However, before driving up, I want to run a Vin check. Unfortunately, the vin I got from the owner (confirmed a second time) is not in any database of any vin checker that I could find. I'm concerned about registering the bike in the State of California.

The owner has confirmed that the emissions label is California approved, but the vin has me concerned. And further, owner has given me a SECOND vin that I guess he got from somewhere else on the bike.

The first vin he gave me is vbkhus4328m710687 and the second one is vbkhus4088m709968. One of these, I believe he stated came from the steering head.

The only whiff of encouragement I got came from Carfax, which came back for the 687 number with a match for the make, model, and year of the bike; but, I assume that can be had just through decoding the vin number, and has nothing specific to the actual bike itself.

I went ahead and bought the Carfax vin check, and it came back with nothing more. And, none of the half dozen or so other sites came back with anything, usually stating the number is not recognized by their database.

Pretty confused right now.

Any thoughts?

Thx.

If you are a Autoclub member they may be able to help. The DMV services dept in Oregon can run the vin and tell you how much it would cost to register it in Oregon. They can probably offer more help as well. Couldn't hurt to check with the CA AAA too.

Are you looking to street register it or just get an off road green sticker?

To obtain a street license it must be CA street emissions approved. To get an off road green sticker it has to be CA off road emissions approved. If it has neither you get a red sticker.

Hey sgomes is this the Sumo in Grants Pass?

If so, it is plated in Oregon, so that is good start. My 08 FE650 which I purchased from Eric is nearly identical and has the EPA and California emissions tag.

Good luck!

BB, well 450 miles later, after first asking Eric to confirm the wording on the emissions label, I find the bikes emissions conform to CA standards for OFF-ROAD vehicles.

Heading home tomorrow.

Thanks for the thought anyway. Also, at $6400, I thought it pricey - it was very nice, but not sure it was that nice.

On the way home we stopped and picked the 05 650 in Sacto. Well used, but still running strong. The money I saved can be put to taking care of some minor issues and sprucing it up.
