I have a 2008 Fe 650 with 32 hrs that just started to have this problem. It cranks over for 2 seconds then starter gear must just pull in and spin. It kicks in on the initial button push but after a couple of cranks it pulls out and just whirls. I've searched some of the forums and see a mention of a "sprague gear and spring " could this be an issue on a bike with such few hours ? What can be done ? Thx.:mad:

Hey Punk,
If the bike has been cold started on the button it won't help, sounds like the starter sprague if it's managing a couple of rotations.

Carl.

Yeah i,ve never ever started it with the kicker. Cold or hot. So this is basically when it was cold yesterday but when the problem started The engine was hot.

Have these starters been this fragile and do you really need to always use the kicker when they're cold or what ? Thx.

They were originally just called re-starters but the earlier models the issue was more to do with weak starter motors.
My 08 450 has just started messing around but it's done a lot more hours than yours.

you need to shim out the starter clutch and strengthen the spring on the sprague. then the third item is to look at the rollers in the sprague very, very carefully. if you can see 1mm wide flats on them then sprague bearing is too worn to contninue and you need a new one. best to start with the new one AND the strengthened spring from the off.

the 450/501 can get awaay with flats IF things like the two are repaired, the decomp is working etc but the 650 really, you need to stop pissing about, get the bearing, get the stronger spring and the shims.

as to WHY, it happened well, obviously the decomp is the absolute #1 reason, and the second and the third. the decomp MUST WORK simple as.

finally, as they get older, the bearings in the cover and the crankcase go. all because you kept hitting the button!!!!

I do a kit called the SRK.
