hello ,
im going to go have a look next week at a 2008 fe550, the owner says the bike burns oil on start up, but goes away when warm mentioned vales seals, do you thing it could be just seals or guides as well? or even whole engine rebuild?
its all the info I have at the moment!
thanks...

If it has 300-400+ hours or so on the motor it probably needs a complete rebuild but..........there is a reed valve on the left (clutch side) of the motor. If the reed valve is damaged the oil level in the crank cavity will be too high (especially at start up) and it will smoke a bit. Also if the oil level is way too high this will contribute to smoking.

Look at the oil level sight glass on the left side engine cover. The oil level should be only slightly higher than the bottom of the sight. The engine only holds 1 liter of oil. Ask the owner if he/she tops off the oil before every ride. If while standing the bike upright you see the oil completely covering the sight glass you know its overfilled.

If the reed valve has become damaged or if a foreign object gets lodged in it, holding it open, then it will smoke. This will not hurt the motor but oil consumption will increase.

If the crankcase is overfilled with oil the excess will eventually get blown out of the breather and digested through the carb (also contributing to smoking). A some what self regulating system.

After the bike has been sitting for awhile oil can also run down from the frame backbone into the carb boot and get sucked in at start up. Again overfilling with oil and also leaving out the filter which goes into breather hose will exacerbate this occurrence.

The Husaberg motor is an offshoot of the original Husky RAL motor (Reed Activated Lubrication). That system used 2 reeds and only a pint of oil.

you'll find within the next few rides it will become a smoke-making machine. the piston is so worn that in the end it can rock beyond a point where the rings can contact the liner wall.

think about it; the liner is round, you have round rings but if you tilt the piston by 2 degrees the bore becomes elliptical but the rings are still round.

so the rings are off the front and back wall and the oil just has clear run.

have I explained that OK?

went with a 2013 beta 498rr with 3300 kms, complete fmf exhaust, seat concept, ims 3.2 gallon tank, new tires, sifffer springs front and back, set of spare tires, fastway hand guards and a bike stand.
