Hey guys! I am contemplating picking up one of these and am looking for some opinions or facts regarding the performance of this machine.
I ride mainly tighter woods (Redwood, Douglas Fir--those type of woods) and I think this bike would be an outstanding choice for this terrain. But having never ridden the 450, I'm concerned if the power would be at least entertaining. I've owned and ridden 650s and 550s (Love the big-bore power and especially torque!) but after reading this DIrt Bike Magazine | OFF-ROAD TEST: HUSABERG FE450 I'm a little concerned it would be--dare I say--a boring ride?
What are your experiences with the 450?

Thank you, gentleman.

I've ridden the 06 FE450 and was not too impressed with the power. Especially since I ride the 650. In comparison also, my 07 CRF 450 seemed to have quite a bit more power than the FE 450.

Well pollo, I think you have given me the answer I need. Seems your experience agrees with the article. Believe I'll pass on this bike.

Besides that the 08 is a very good bike with components and upgrades

You talking about that one in Redding? I like the 450 over the 650 for tight woods riding.

Yea, I was toying with that one too.

Fe Husaberg 450

I have an 07 450 and works well in the tight woods. They definitely have a different power delivery than an MX bike, more linear.

Linear is great for tight woods work. Maybe I shouldn't write this bike off?

Here's where I'm at. My TE570 works great everywhere but tight trail work. I bought a KLX300 for the tight trails but as much fun as it was to toss it around, I just missed the power. I sold it. I also have a gentleman who is supposed to be coming up from the Bay Area to buy the 570 in a week or so. I'm looking for a bike that can bridge the gap between the two.

I'm going to go check out a 2003 KTM 525MXC tomorrow. I've heard that first gear is too tall for tight trail work but if you gear them down it works okay. Any of you guys have experience with this bike?

bruce, i have had both the fe450 and the ktm 525. the 450 is the berg i found to be the best all around trailer in all conditions, and i have had all of the pre-ldc bergs. power very linear and if you keep the revs higher, enough power to get the adrenaline going. snap wheelies very easy. 525 ktm feels heavier, but more bottom end than 450. front brake tries to throw you over the bars. one big thing i didn't care for on the ktm was that maintenance is a pain in the *** compared to how easy it is on the berg (except removing the battery). i was always more comfy on the 450 overall. it's easier to ride.
i noticed the ad for the 450 says "it needs carb work" i would be very cautious.

Thanks for that comparison, Ned.
Carb work doesn't scare me as I've had my hands in them for years. I do know, here in CA with our craptacular pump gas, if you leave a bike parked with this stuff in it for any length of time, you'll need a carb cleaning.

Ned might be referring to a problem that is not really carb related. It's good to be able to hear a bike run before making an offer.
But anyway if it is just that $2000 seems like a reasonable price .

I bought a 04 FE450 for the tight woods It has a fan kit and tank from a 07 I find the fan is always on. I did not want to overheat it and blow it up I ended up buying a GasGas EC250 I like it way better in the tight stuff

pollo understands. people tend to claim "carb trouble" for all sorts of ills. you are right about the fuel, tho.

your woods must have three lanes in each direction? over here 'woods' means a tree every three yards and you're handlebars won't fit through the gaps.

over here - no way would you ride a 650 and call it any good whatsoever! trash! and a KLX300 can't be ridden to any kind of speed without the front wheel washing out, washing out and then well,,,,,, washing out.

there are quicker bikes than the FE450 but for most mortals it is quick enough. very flickable.

I do a jetting kit that smoothes out the bottom end. Husaberg used more or less the same jetting for all their bikes and I think the 450 suffers from this a little.

Your right of course about the 650 on tight trails Taffy. Although it can be effective but your on the clutch a lot. I always seemed to surprise most if my friends by getting away.

The KLX 300 is completely gutless.

I rode the KTM 520. I Iiked the power delivery but it turns poorly. The FE 450 although a little soft turns very well and is flickable I agree

I just spoke with the seller of the 450 on the phone. I asked him point blank about the carb work and said it doesn't need any engine work right? He said no engine work, just the carb. He said it's been sitting for a few months and the carb got gummed up.
So just out of curiosity I ask him if he ever gets over to Eureka. He says "Yeah I do. I can bring the bike over if you want to check it out." Well alrighty! He's going to call me in a week or so and let me know when he's coming this way.
Maybe he has a job that brings him over here once in a while or something. It's about a 3.5 hour drive.
Of course now someone local to him will probably come by and purchase it.

Nice bike husabutt, but it doesn't have enough strokes. :D

The 450's coming over tomorrow. Here's hoping it's not a P.O.S. :)
