2007 fe550e piston inspection - tools needed

I'm about to check the piston in my 2007 fe550e that has not been worked on since new.

I want to get all the tools and parts before starting work.

1. Looking through the workshop manual one thing I am unsure of is whether I need to buy a new cam chain, or if mine already has a split link for easy assembly?

2. Also is it possible to replace the piston by just removing the RHS of the crank case (ie flywheel side)?

Thanks!

hello mate

you can't because the crank must be removed and you have it bolted through the left cover don't you!

if untouched the cam chain will have a soft link in it. the cam chain must be broken to get the head off.

suggest you get a cam chain with a split link in it for all times sake.

special tools?
flywheel puller for sure
clutch holding tool? (here the clutch holding tool is called 'Steve')

Thanks for the quick reply!

Sounds like a right chew on! I'm used to two strokes that take 15 mins to whip the barrel off...

I was gonna get a flywheel puller yeah. I also read it is risky using the crank locking bolt to loosen the flywheel bolt cos it might twist the crank, so might find an impact driver.

The manual has two lock tools for the clutch side 800.29.003.000 and 800.29.004.000 Are these both needed or is there a simpler method?

So if I have this correct I'll need these tools:

1. Crank locking bolt.
2. Flywheel puller.
3. Clutch locking tool.
4. Dremel to split cam chain.

and parts:

1. New cam chain (with split link).
2. Piston kit or rings.

i have an old 17mm headed bolt with just 15mm of thread and it sits beautifully between the crank gear teeth and the shoulder for the cover bolt that is in the case casting.

for the clutch I used to air gun them but got posh with pro-motion clutch holding 'mole grip'. i just air gun them undone now.

only 15 minutes for a 2T.... not bad, I might have the rocker cover off by then!!!

I use a grinderette on the cam chain.
