2007 FE550E Ignition Questions

I am currently sourcing aftermarket gauges to put on my 2007 FE550E.

I have searched the site, and the internet, but have not found definitive answers to these questions:

1) Does the ignition have a rev limiter?
2) If yes, to what RPM is the engine limited?
3) If no, to what RPM should one self limit the RPM to avoid engine damage?
4) Does the ignition fire the spark plug every revolution of the crankshaft, or every 2 revolutions of the crankshaft? Some old threads stated that earlier bikes with the SEM ignition did fire the spark plug every revolution of the crankshaft, but I have not found this info yet for the Kokusan ignition.

Thanks for any help!!

Gday wescat

1) Does the ignition have a rev limiter? no

2) If yes, to what RPM is the engine limited? naturally limited by timing and flow restrictions to about right

3) If no, to what RPM should one self limit the RPM to avoid engine damage? the 650 with an 80mm stroke handles between 8500 and 9000 rpm ok but if it were a street car 7500 would be the limit. 550 has 70mm stroke see calculator

4) Does the ignition fire the spark plug every revolution of the crankshaft, or every 2 revolutions of the crankshaft? Some old threads stated that earlier bikes with the SEM ignition did fire the spark plug every revolution of the crankshaft, but I have not found this info yet for the Kokusan ignition.

fires every revolution since there is no sensor to determine the camshaft position

Thanks Bushie.
Regarding piston velocity, where about is 'safe' and where is 'dangerous' more or less?

everyone has a different idea about it and it depends on a many variables

mainly it depends on how long you spend at top rpm vs low rpm and how long everything else in the engine lasts you can read for hours and hours about "safe" speeds ranging from 3500fpm to 7000fpm depending on the application

i don't have a 550 so i can only share what seems about safe for my 80mm stroke engines. which is that 4500fpm is fine but 5000fpm was asking a bit much

there are 613cc ktm rfs engines with really light cranks at 78mm stroke going out to 10K regularly which is 5100fpm
