2007 fe550 hot start issues

I couldn't find a similar issues in the previous posts...so:

Cold starting no problem, but after about 10 min of riding I have to put the bike in neutral and pull the hot start on the carb, crank it for 4 seconds and then give a blip on the throttle and it will start up. Would this be exhaust valves being out of spec?

Also, if I flood the bike it won't start for a good half hour or until I jump start it...

Cheers :bounce:

hi hurtin

definatly sounds like ur valve clearences but from what u have described i would say it was ur inlets because it sounds like ur running very rich when hot but u should check both inlets and exhaust as they need checking on a regular basis as part of ur service and maintenance

cheers kris

My 2008 FE650 would stall and require hot start to be pulled to re-start, then eventually would stop completely when hot and would not start until it cooled down, then it would run great. I didn't realize heat was the problem, thought it was float, jets, gas, etc. Often it would happen while climbing a hill, so I thought it was the float, but actually the heat was already at the limit, and then climbing a hill increased the heating enough to boil the gas and stall me.

I fixed a number of things to no avail, and finally put heat shielding between the exhaust and the carb and fuel lines. That fixed it for good. I've also wrapped the pipe now too, which would also help with this problem.

My 08 550 showed similar issues, tried everything, in the end traced it to a faulty plug cap, replaced the hard plastic one with a decent branded rubber version and its been fine since,
Jock.

Thanks for the posts, I'm going to start with the valves as I remember when the bike was newer it started great even on hot days. The heat shielding could help too :bounce:

Does anybody have a 'adjusting fe550 valves for dummies" link? I have my old notes from my 07 450XC but this beast is slightly different. I need to find the crank stop bolt for one and the coolant drain bolt.

Thanks

sounds also like Jock may be on it? he rarely speaks but when he does it is worth listening too and for 10 bucks dude?

I would next try the fuel screw in a few different positions. I believe that it is over 1 full turn out. half a turn out equals a cough but this is more like a whole turn.

regards

Taffy
