OK My 550 will start fine when its been sitting in the garage , on both E start and Kick . It also starts fine when hot .

But when I take it off the ute after driving to a ride its a complete ***** to start , roll start seems to be the only thing to start her up .

Any ideas ????

I m thinking maybe go smaller on the pilot ?

Check the Valves ?

thanks in advance

Flooding, do you turn the fuel tap(s) off when transporting? What year 550, Keihin or Dellorto?

Both taps?
I ll double check But I only use the other one as a reserve and never turn it on .

I was thinking of maybe draining the fuel bowl before trailering to a ride ? I d really like to get it sorted with out having to do this though .
thanks

If its all good other than after transporting, it must be flooding. Leaky fuel tap is all i can think of. Do you use the hot start and no choke to get it going, or only a bump start it?

Perhaps the flaot level is a bit high too?

I only use the hot start when its alraedy hot .

I use the Choke when cold .

Yep I think your right about flooding , both taps shut the fuel off no probs .

Its way harder to start cold flooded than hot flooded , Its not that bad really after you loop it out etc then pick it up , I usually just kick it over with the manual decomp on a few times then she fires up , when its cold and apparently getting flooded its a ***** , I have to roll start it .

thanks again

In this case, using the choke makes it even richer if already flooded, so try no choke, and the hot start will lean it off, so even cold it can be used to advantage if flooded.

Pull you hoses off your fuel taps and check whether the taps leak.

Great I ll give that a go , thanks for that .

Other than this issue this bike is a great machine .

Ok no leak in the fuel taps .

Its definately flooding while transporting though , I ll transport with the fuel turned off and I ll drain the fuel bowl as atemp fix .It seems to flood very easy all I have to do is twist the throttle a few times and its flooded and takes a bit to fire .

What should I look at doing to fix this issue ? any ideas please

Don't touch the throttle until running perhaps?

If you play with the throttle grip when unloading you can/will flood it, especially if the ap stroke is standard.

When securing the bike in the ute/trailer do you by any chance tie it off on the throttle grip in some way?

If the carb is still standard, you will greatly improve it by leaning the jetting and reducing the stroke of the accelerator pump which may assist the flooding problem.

Lots of jetting info in the Doc, or get a kit off Taffy, who wrote much of the Doc.

Not really, I did join some years ago, so presumably I am still a member, but I can't remember the last time I looked at it.

And you may also want to check the float level, although if its OK at other times, probably won't be the cause.

Shane,
I'd agree with Steve...I've found the followign with my 550 if it helps

a. No or next to no throttle to start 1/8th of a blip max.

b. I usually only use my choke for the first start of the day then shut it off quickly and warm the engine by the throttle.

c. I have one of Taffy's jetting kits with all of the goodies if you're interested. I bought one but never used it my 550 runs as sweet as a nut just the way it is.

d. I'm in Brisbane too if you're keen to hook up for a ride...can never have to many 550's in the pack

Cheers

Yeah mate keen for a ride with your crew , PM me when you guys are heading out next .I d be happy to buy that kit as well and give it a try .

thanks all for the help , I messed around today and it seems all it was was flooding due to me twisting the throttle when unloading then trying to start with the choke which makes it worse . I think I ve mastered it now ,.
