2007 550FE idle problem

Hi from Estonia !

I was riding off road and suddenly i noticed that when i pull clutch in or stop, the idle is very low and eventually dies. Started up good and after some revving it sometimes stays on good rpm but after some more revving or riding it still wants to die on idle. No bogging on fast throttle and basically on the move its perfect. But on the speed when closing the throttle it will bang loud from exhaust (not the usual softer exhaust popping on deceleration). On some short moments it was ok (no loud bangs and normal idle).
So i guess mixture gets lean on off throttle? Ok- cleaned the carb (compressed air), valve clearance ok, rubber boots ok and tight.
Took off the whole valve cover to check valve springs- ok.
Spark plug looks nice. O-ring on throttle valve plate maybe bit worn.
After assembling i had to set idle adjusting screw almost all in to get it start and idle (before it started good although weak idle) . Now when bike is idling and i rev it a bit it wont fall immediately to idle and when i rev it bit harder then it stays on high rpm (maybe thats a moment when it sorta works but now idle speed screw is off). If anything its worse. Mixture screw was 2 turns open. I have not done any tuning on carb nor bike so carb settings are like i bought it. Problem started suddenly. I have owned the bike 4 years and has running strong all time. It has 205 hours on it. Numbers in jets are as follows: 100, 200, 85, 195, 48. Needle: OBDVR on 4th from bottom. Cleaned carb once more and no improvement. Now carb again apart and soaked in motorex carb cleaner for the nigth.

In meanwhile any ideas?

you are running very rich and I'm not surprised that the PS is nearly all the way in!

that 48 should be a 38 and that 100 a 60. then the PS will come out a bit further.

the MJ should be a 165 but a 170 at the highest is all you want.

Thaks Taffy but how is that It has working fine for years and now suddenly very rich u say + spark plug is, if anything, bit too lean looking.

god your fast!
No i have done no tuning/tweaking on carb/pilot screw before.

then try it half a turn either way and if one is better than the other be prepared to turn that into a full turn.

but it could be your slide plate is cracked or tappets have tightened sufficiently to change the bike recently.

at the end of the day though: your engine is very rich,

Ok i will assemble it in a weekend and see what happens.
Before that problem it was running good and started up easily with kick starter hot or cold. Now if u say based on jet sizes that it is very rich, that means it has been like that at least 4 years, then what signs would have told me that?
And is it rich all over or only at the base?

everywhere!

some jetting numbers are in the doc. signs of it? errr? pig to start hot? poor MPG? everything black? stalls easily when hot?

maybe you had none of these?

Thanks- i m totally confused now! It can work perfectly even when its not perfect?
Anyway i will assemble it in weekend and see what happens. I am not that convinced yet that i need your jet kit:)

Thanks for the info and i will update if news

Best regards

Update!

Ok - bike seems to work fine. Starts up good hot or cold. Installed trail tech rpm reader for tweaking. Is factroy recommended 1400-1500 idle rpm ok for setup tweaking? Has no hesitation when giving WT on idle. But now the mix screw needs to be out bit over 3 turns!? Will to longer test ride tomorrow and if no problems then going to race on sunday in easier type enduro race.

Regards!
