2006 FS650C (full Akra system) - Need jetting help

I have Taffmeister's kit in and I'm not getting good results right now....

2006 FS 650C
FCR MX 41
Full Ti Akrapovic system (db killer in)
Sea Level

Here's where I started:

Main jet - 160
Idle jet - 45
MAJ - 200
Idle air jet - 100
Needle - 4th from top (OBKER needle)
Starting jet - 85
Mixture screw - 1.5 turns out

Here's where I am now:

Main jet - 160
Idle jet - 45
MAJ - Taffy's (no number on it)
Idle air jet - 55
Needle - 6th from top (out of 9) (Taffy's needle)
Starting jet - 85
Mixture screw - 0.5 turns out

I'm getting some bog of the "snap wheelies", but the mixture screw doesn't seem to help when it's turned out more. Starting (cold) is more difficult now as well. The rest of the bike feels fine I guess, but I need to take it to a tuner to run the air/fuel ratio.... I'm just looking to get as close as possible before going over there....

I'm by no means a pro at this tuning stuff, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all....

Just wondering, do you still have the accelerator pump connected?

Re: * * 2006 FS650C (full Akra system) - Need jetting help *

what a shame I haven't been contacted before you go open with this. why?

the kit asks you to fit the PJ supplied but you have the original 45 in it still according to your figures. please fit the PJ. also disconnect the APJ completely if in any doubt and then do the mod afterwards.

with the correct PJ you should come close enough that the PS will be invaluable and take over.

regards

Taffy

You were contacted (a few times via email) prior to my posting this....

You had all my info (bike, carb, mods, old jetting numbers, elevation)....

BTW... The PJ supplied (37.5) actually felt more off than with the 45....

I didn't post up here to slam you.... I simply wanted/needed more info from others that have used your kit (or perhaps other means of acquiring proper jetting for my bike)....

Sorry if you were offended.....

I am very offended. I don't know who you are?

If you let me know your name I'll check for what you have said and see if I'm any the wiser.

Taffy

Post note:

Chris
your total comments so far to me about the testing are one email in which you "saw 120mph on the speedo". now in no way can that be seen as constructive, as criticism or any indication of what you now describe.

the only sarcasm I made was a joke about the Dyno guys OK? now I know you can't separate business from a joke I won't make a joke again.

but if you want to give me valid feedback, as I said, I'm here but I think you need to follow the instructions on the sheets, prove you have done valid tests etc before you make a criticism of my product.

most of my aussie customers say that they "had it all done in two hours''.

regards

Taffy

Put a 50 pilot jet instead of the 45 should fix your starting problem. Use a obekr 2nd clip from top 160 or 165 main this all seems to work on mine really good. I did try a obdvt and it ran like crap. Hope this helps. Mine has a akra too.

Birdwood

the 50PJ is totally the wrong way to go with my kit. it might be what worked for you but that doesn't make it right.

I've recommended to Hollywood the 40PJ and hope he tries it. then he can look forward to a nice crisp, instant response bottom end. a 50PJ only cures flat spots it most certainly doesn't make the bike responsive and clean revving.

try 40pj like taffy recomends and start with a PAS @ 5/8 and adjust from there.

For wot my 2 cents is worth...... my PS is at 4 turns out to get a nice idle and crisp transition onto the needle. I am using Taffy's needle and a 37.5 pilot. 6 week wait for the 40 pilot jet down here. I will try a 42 as its available now but priddy sure 40 is the one for me. (45 standard).
I have the clip on the needle position 7 from the top, but with the current 175MJ, 6 from top would be better.

The biggest effect of goin to the smaller pilot with Taffy's needle is the ability to drive smoothly and cleanly off poor traction situations and to smooth out small throttle openings. Motor no longer CHUGCHUGCHUGs below 95kmh in top, instead it just purrs away from 85 kmh in top. Still turns on like a good un when you open the throttle proper tho.

Example.... I like pulling wheelies.... on my 1980 DR400, CRF250X, CB1300, 1973 TS185, 1995 WR250 etc, through 2 or 3 or 4 gears, round bends, videos for a km down the beach etc..... I LIKE wheelies. Even after several 1000 kms on my berg I still did not feel comfortable sitting it on the back wheel... Powerstands anywhwere, anytime but not balance wheelies UNTIL I installed Taffy's needle and small pilot, I now have control over those small throttle openings...... 3rd gear Powerstands now turn into 4th and 5th gear balance wheelies..... AWsome.

P.S. I spent several bears studying the subtle differences between stock and Taffy's needle.... conclusion.......
My vision gets blury after several bears.

Ya secrets safe with me Taffy..... just send me more beer. :D

Fellas....

This is the kind of info I was looking for... Thank you!

I wanted different opinions from people who have tried different settings (both with and without Taffy's kit)....

I will be trying to acquire a 40 PJ to try out....

Again....
Thanks for the constructive replies Gents

Forgot to mention starting..... cold blooded with the 37.5 pilot.... needs choke for a minute or so now instead of just a few seconds with the 45 pilot.

My method for startup from cold is full choke, two squirts on the pumper, one big kick and away. everytime.

This was a big problem I was having with the 37.5 pilot jet.... It was not starting good at all.... (better with the 45, but then I was getting bogs on snap wheelie tests)....

I just ordered a 40 PJ off Ebay with a few more mains (165,170,175) for the hell of experimentation....

Re: * * 2006 FS650C (full Akra system) - Need jetting help *

Mine didn't come right and nice till I got the PS out around four turns from closed (thats with the 37.5) but the screw starts to loose resistance (end of spring travel?) hence I want to go to a 40 jet to get the screw back towards centre of range (1.5-2.5 turns from closed).

Damn that was a mouthful.

L8a mate.

BTW Bergos....

My 650C seems to be the best wheelie bike yet (except for the SXV 550 i used to own).... 8)

Taffy

Please read carefully before making statements or thinking you are right.

1) I didn't say use a 50 pilot with your kit.

2) I didn't say it will fix it with your kit (i dont have your kit) i said with the needle obekr.

3) I didn't say it will work on his i said worked on mine.

4) If a starting is a problem with a smaller pilot is going to make it harder again to start. As hollywood found out by going down in a pilot size. I didn't make any comment on (taffys needle) at all as i have never use one.

Mine bike is a 2004 FS650 his is 2006 Fs650 different motors size both have a akra and db killer (this affects jettin and back presure. With much testing this set up works very well on (mine) may work on hollywoods he will have to try. Looking back over many jetting reviews there are many that are very close to this set up. I did get paper work with my bike for jetting with Akra and it is just about spot on to what i listed and hollywood had in his at the start apart from clip position. There a re many factors temps condition of motor/condition of carb ect all you can do is try/test and be patient. The fs650 jetting might be totally wrong for a FE650 due to speeds and throtle opening speeds bog, might show up more on mx track than on the road, but transtion from on area in throttle to another might show up more on the road so check with taffy if his kits are different. Happy Testing.

Birdwoodburg....

First off, "Thanks" for throwing your set-up at me... Like I explained to Taffy, I was looking for other set-ups (not just with his needle, but with other needle/jet combos)..... You can never have too much info....

I'm in the USA (South Florida to be exact)... It is a couple hundred feet above sea level at most and the temps/humidity are generally high here (upper 80's to mid 90's Fahrenheit most of the year with high humidity)....

Funny thing is that I just put all of his jets in with the OBKER needle (MJ 160 / 37.5 PJ / 55 PAJ / unmarked Taffy MAJ / and the OBKER needle 4th from the top / FS 2.5 turns out) and it starts easy again and rips pretty good, but it still has a small bog with 2nd gear "snap wheelies".... This seems to be working the best so far .?.?.?

I'll play more with his needle when the 40 PJ arrives.....

Try the 50 paj and second clip from top on that needle. I have been testing the set screw on acc pump and the more you go in the better the bike wheelies. You can start in second gear pop it up and keep it there and just keep shifting put the wheelie down in top gear at around 120-140kph
