2006 fe550e - New valve spring kit without removing the head?

I'm doing anything I can to improve the longevity of my '06 fe550e. It's much too cold to ride right now, so I figured it would be a good time to go through this machine and do what I could. I've replaced the timing chain and added a tiny brass tube and hose for the water pump drain. The previous owner had sealed the hole up with silicone.
I've read that the stock valve springs can be tough on the cam and the seats, so I have the Taffmeister's DVSK kit on the way. I failed to order a new head gasket at the same time as the valve spring kit, so I'm wondering how tough it would be to change the springs with the head still on the engine.

Taffy says it's possible but not advisable for obvious reasons. Any advice from anyone who has successfully pulled this off would be welcome.

Assuming I order (and wait for three or more weeks) a new head gasket, remove the head, and change the valve springs, possibly the guides and seals, are there any other things I need to be aware of? Will I need new head bolts, or can the ones I have be used again?

Well, 37 views and not one comment. . .

I guess doing valve springs without removing the head is not wise.

Well, you could replace the main bearings, balance and weld the crank ($$), check the other bearings and flush the radiator. Frankly, the 550 is a pretty reliable bike. The mains don't suffer as much as they do on the 650s. Dual valve spring fix is important.

The bike ran great before I dove into the timing chain. During my first one-hour ride (what a great bike), I heard periodic metallic noise from the engine and figured it was the timing chain. While I have had it offline waiting for parts, I've been reading a lot, and Taffey's valve spring kit was highly recommended. Why I didn't order a head gasket at the same time is beyond me. Now, simply ordering the $25.00 gasket alone jumps to $40.00 due to shipping.

I am a fairly competent mechanic, but balancing and welding the crank is way out of my comfort zone. Besides, I believe I can remove the head without splitting the case - true?

A new gasket is on the way. Not only is my wallet lighter, but one of my legs is also a bit longer!
