Happy Endings!
Hey all,
I know I have been tardy in getting my year end race report out. Since coming back from Long Beach, I've been trying to catch up on work missed while also cramming for final exams. Now, I need a study break so I thought I would put out a brief update.
We made it out to Cali with a 4 rider team once again, and for the second time this year all 4 Bergs made the main event. The difference this time was that we had to work hard for it unlike the sloppy wet Road America 2 where everyone automatically made the main. Out of timed qualifying, Robert Loire took his standard 10th place qualifying (he qualified 9th or 10th 8 out of 10 rounds this year). Mike Bergman, Olivier Annequin and I took our spots in the LCQ. Mike and I quickly settled into 3rd and 4th and held those positions to the finish. Olivier's ride was a little more exciting as he battled for the final transfer spot. He along with a few others fell, but thanks to his Berg's magic button, he was able to get going and put it in the main.
At the start of the main event, the only way to describe the scene was mass chaos. In trying to protect their lead riders battling for the championship, both KTM and Husky brought in other riders. The plan backfired severely for Husky. Troy Herfoss, making his only Unl class start this year got horribly out of shape going into the 1st corner and went over some haybales and into a fence and a cornerworker (who was in the hospital for a couple days but is now okay). The result spit haybales out across the track right in front of his teammate that he was trying to protect David Baffleuf and for good measure Baffleuf ended up connecting with the 3rd Husky Alex Thibeault. Somehow everybody else made it through except the 3 factory Huskies.
In the mean time Mike, Robert, and I managed to get arround the carnage quite well, and found ourselves from the 3rd corner running together in 6-8th positions. The race, however had to be red flagged to let the ambulances take care of the injured cornerworker.
On the restart, things did not go quite so well. Robert got a good jump, but on the entrance to the dirt on the first lap he lost the front end. Normally, this would not be a big issue for Robert, but along with getting slammed by a few bikes, he soon realized that his rear brake pedal had broken off. Fearing that his 5th place in the season championship that he had worked so hard for might be slipping away, he rode like a madman back thru the pack (with no rear brake)!
In the mean time Mike Bergman was having his best ride of the year by far. Starting just outside the top 10, Mike worked his way past a few riders and stayed on the bike which is more than many could say on the tight technical track. By the 6th lap he found himself in 9th place which he would hold to the finish.
My ride was fairly good after my typical poor start (I really need to work on that), I worked past a few riders and ended with the best finish of my first year as a pro in 14th place.
Olivier also put in a solid ride on a tight track that was about the exact opposite to the fast flowing tracks that he is used to running in Europe.
In the end, Robert was able to work his way all the way back up to 11th. Even though that ends his 2 year perfect streak of top 10 finishes, it was enough to keep 5th in the Championship over Justin Ross who finished 5th on the day and 2 points behind Robert in the final championship.
We were glad to meet a lot of Husaberg folks around in the pits, including a surprise visit by some of our Canadian friends who stopped thru on their way to New Zealand for the Six Days. Good Luck Guys!
Finally, I am pleased to be able to announce that our team will be back on Husabergs once again next year. I will keep you all updated any news on the team, but for now Robert and Mike are definetely going to be back and running the full series. Olivier and I will probably at least run a partial schedule.
Thanks again to all for the support this year.
Especially to Brett!
Best Regards,
Colin Horn

p.s. The race will be televised on VS. tomorrow afternoon some time. There is a good chance that I will get some TV time since I strategically let Mickey Dymond lap me just before the checkered flag
