2006 650 E-Start - To Use or Not?

I have a 2006 650 and I was told by a Husaberg mechanic that it is not wise to use the e-start when the bike is cold. He said if I did it could do a lot of damage. He didn't however elaborate on what would happen.

Any thoughts?

Millions of bikes around the world use an electric starter and have no problems so what could be so different on the Husaberg?
 
Yeah, it seems its only a 're-starter' :shock:

To play it safe i get the oil around and warm the bore slightly by giving it a few kicks first, with petrol off, ignition off and decomp lever pulled in.

Dunno if im doing right or wrong, but the way i see it is - its just like kick starting it.

I cant see how starting it with the button affects anythin, but im no mechanic. How is restarting it different to starting it? :?
 
I have a 2005 fs650e

The issues you will run into is the torque limiter gear will start to slip (there's a fix for that by adding a shim). the other is your one way bearing ( sprague gear ) will start to spin freely. The diagnosis for these is when you hit the e-starter button, the starter will turn over but the engine won't.


what you can do is you the manual decomp to get the engine spinning and then release the lever while still on the e-starter button. this way it's easier for the engine to spin past TDC and the valves opening.

I use my e-starter most of the time but I do use my kickstarter when it's really cold out.

Oh def yeah, i always pull the decomp lever an get the engine turnin over quite fast, then dump the decomp lever and it fires straight away.

Ive never just press the start button, that must put stress on parts and is a mega drain on the battery.

Had the sprag and other bits done last time it was at garage. Its worth using leccy start and replacing a few parts than getting a kick back and braking ya ankle. Thats what puts me off using the kick start - plus its ruddy hard work :lol:
 
I've never heard of any 05-08 having any problem with the electric starter. I had a 04 which sometimes were slipping a bit but never a real problem. My 02 on the other hand... :lol: So I'd say use the e-start and if you encounter slipping just pull the manual decomp lever.

01-03 are the re-starters anything newer are the real deal so use it and be happy. :)

mine is a 2005 and I have done the torque limiter gear mod and replaced the sprague gear (complete ) once. My issue with the sprague gear was actually the outer gear was worn out. My bike also has 284hrs and 20100kms. I also ride my bike everyday to work.

This problem does exist on the newer models but not nearly as much as pre-2004.

with a starter repair kit fitted and the auto decomp done they will start on the button. that is when the bike is new.... nowadays we're looking at tappets that get cupped so poorly set, worn Keihin carbs etc.

the other problem is that no starter sprague likes oil in it and when they are cold they slip because of the oil. you can kickstart them and then stop them after 5 seconds, hit the button and they start first time.

that is why I still recommend semi-synthetic over fully still....

Ive been reading a lot about the sprague failure of engines between 01-03 but what about the engines before 01, the ones that have the starter motor in front of the cyilinder ? are their e-starter like the newer engines or are like the 01-03 engines ?

they are also poor and for exactly the same reasons:

the auto decomp doesn't work so the sprague slips.

unfortunately you can't do the sprague bearing on that engine without splitting the cases.

the inner gear looks really rough where the previous owner has continually hit the button and the sprague has slipped.

you can't buy any of the parts any more. all you can do is get an engineer to machine 0.2mm off the inside face of the inner gear and shorten the sprague's spring.

you must address the auto decomp same problem and same cure to it as later on.

history repeats itself....
