2005 or 2007 FE550E Need advice!!

Please be gentle, I am a Husaberg.org virgin!

I have lurked on this site for some time and have found the wealth of information available great. Thanks for all the info. Unfortunately sometimes too much information can also scare off new purchases. I put some $ down on a brand new 2005 fe550 last week and can't wait for my first ride on the beast. (I am fortunate to have a local dealer that has a genuine interest in the Husaberg product!) Since then, I have paid closer attention to the threads that discuss main bearing failures. I try to take everything I read with a grain of salt, people seldom take time to post when things are going well and the forum is an excellent way of discussing common issues in the effort to resolve them. All that said to get to my point...Should I spend the extra $$ to get the 2007 with the strengthened case at the main and increased tolerance crank in the effort to reduce future frustration? It seems to me that Husaberg wouldn't have made changes to the 2007 without good reason. Or, under normal use, will the 2005 provide the reliability that one would expect from a bike such as this? ( I am not a racer, I am looking for a good woods bike that will be dual sported for short trips to work (less than 10 km one way))

Thanks in advance for your time and your patience!

many on here have 04-05 bikes with LOTS of hours and no issues. not saying it can't happen, but if you are not racing, personally i would not let thet be an issue. I bet the price difference is signifigant, possibly more than replacing a bearing.

my 05 is pretty much brand new. i've only had it a year, so it only has 150 hrs (3300 miles), but i certainly haven't had a problem with it.

another thing to consider is the suspension tho. i know the 07 ktm's are head and shoulders above previous years in the suspension. if the 07 bergs have improved similarly (i didn't get to ride on in moab, but fritz did and said it was much better than his 06 stock), then there might be another few hundred bucks worth there.

yet another thing to consider, if you want the new bigger tank, it would appear that the 05 kickstarter interferes with it, so i'll probably be buying an 06/07 kickstarter if no one else comes up with a cheaper solution. of course, since i only use the kickstarter once per ride (to start the bike cold). i suppose i could just take it off while the bike is warming up. lol.

anyone wanna buy an 05 kickstart lever?

Thanks for the quick replies. I appreciate the minor differences that make the 2007 better than the 2005 such as suspension changes and tank size etc. That being said, the 2005 is $2500 cheaper than the 2007 and I am more than willing to accept those differences. I am a laid back novice off road rider that is moving up from a 1983 XL600R so the 2005 should be light years ahead of what I am familiar with. The only issue that concerns me and would probably pry more money from my wallet would be if reliability is going to be an issue with the 2005.

Is there any correlation to rider technique and the bearing failures? Do they fail when used for extended road trips or is it due to using the higher end of the rev spectrum? (I don't tend to rev my machines too much at present but who knows what kind of monster I'll become when I try the Berg!)

You'd have to talk to the fellas Down Under as far as bearing failures. They are the ones raising the ruckus. I would quit worrying about reliability on an '05 model. If it suits your budget, buy it.

I don't have as many miles as Velo's does, but it has been reliable as a stone, as were all the other 550's I was around last week in Moab.

Welcome to the club Outcast.
I don't think you will have any issues with your 550. You say you don't like to over rev it which is fine
but don't lug it too much either. Does it come with a warranty?

Yes, it comes with a 1 year warranty. Sounds like the 1 year warranty can be had for the 2007 for an extra $200. The last 11 months are non-factory warranty and I am not sure if the bearing is considered normal wear and tear.

Well, today I succombed! Switched the '05 for an '07!! Dealer made me an offer on the new one with 1 year warranty that I couldn't refuse. Can't wait for my first ride. (dual sport kit to be installed this week). Hopefully the snow will be gone by the weekend so that I can start the break-in. Thanks to all for the much needed advice.

Outcast.... did you buy the 07 almost purely because of the reduced price, or more peace of mind?

I'm in the same boat as you were.....looking at the newer 550's..

The failures on the 05's have raised my interest as to caution me, but it seems like they are somewhat isolated to certain regions of the world, or under severe circumstances....

I'm thinking I can realiably say the 05 might work for me, but there are no guarantees I guess.....

Enjoy your 07!!!

Ryboj,
The '07 suspension, front and rear, is much better than on the '05 model.

The new style tank and shrouds also flow air better and allow fitment of the factory fan. The only gripe I have with my '05 is that it is prone to overheating in tight, tough/technical terrain, which it probably wasn't designed for anyway. If I was buying today, I'd do the '07 if it was within my budget.

John, thanks for the candid reply.

If my TC doesn't sell, I will be keeping it, then waiting for a 07 to drop down in price....

Thanks!

the aussies are having trouble becuase the earth's magnetic spin is upside down, down there. The correolis effect is backwards and the bearing centrifugal force collides with the backwards pimgy gravitational moon cycle.
