Hello Guys, I am a new member of this forum and have just purchased a 2005 Husaberg FE 550 for $7,500 from a dealer in Sydney, Australia. It only showed 385 k's on the odometer though I doubt that was genuine. It does however appear to be in very good condition and doesn't appear to have had a lot of use...

I really like the bike and appreciate all the mountains of info available on this site, although after reading about all the drama with failed main bearings on my particular year & model I am now sh!ting myself that I may have bought myself someonelse's trouble!!!

If my particular bike was one of the apparent dodgy ones with this problem (which seems peculiar to Australia), would it have blown up by now, or am I worrying about nothing?

I was previously owned a 2002 KTM 400 EXC that I had trouble free riding from for 3 years but I got sick of the colour orange....

Thanks in anticipation.....

Keep the oil changed and don't constantly lug the heck out of her. I think you bought an excellent bike. Sure a few Aussie 550's have had problems but you never hear from the many that are just fine.

Bad news spreads on the internet but good news seldom gets a mention.

Don't be paranoid. Ride it and you'll love it!!!!!

Hi Logjump, Thanks for your reply. I'm looking forward to getting a few rides in on the 550 soon - it certainly seems like a step-up from my KTM 400 EXC!!!

Mine's just fine :D

The other thing I have been warned about is not overfiling your radiator or your oil, this can lead to the dreaded weeping problems.

Have fun & ride loose brother 8)

You sound like the guy who brought my 550 05 demo from Highway Performance Rockdale as a trade in, if so it was my demo and while we monitored the crank endfloat we never had to do the retrofit bearing replacement, it started its life in Orange then down to Bathurst for a while i never ran the speedo so that explains the low ks

Hello John, Yes I am the guy that bought your ex-demo from Highway Performance and I appreciated the time you took to talk to me about it on the phone last month. I didn't really know anything about the crankshaft problem when I talked to you then as I had not looked far enough into the posts on this webiste.

I intend to only trail ride it so hopefully I won't have any dramas (gulp!).

P.S: Any idea how may kilometers you may have done on it? I know you said you mainly used it for motorcross/grass track so it might be hard to tell I guess.

Thanks, Brian

Brian that bike ran faultless for me but it did get a fair workout when i was in the pilot seat it was a great bike and i have a soft spot for it, since then weve moved on with the 06 650 and havnt looked back my 07 should be here for the force ride, the 550 was serviced by my mechanic regularly with all the good oil (motorex) i demo rode it a few times but mainly it was my bike and did sit around the workshop for weeks sometimes without a ride and popped a few flames out of the AKRO pipe when we hung back at the workshop some nights with a few ales. I sold it into Bathurst to an older fella thats when i fitted the speedo we now service his KTM250excf and told me it had a bit too much mumbo for him to handle. I guess he only done 300 or so ks on it plus my 1500 ks doesnt sound much, BUT i have done bearings on the same model at that or less. My suggestion is that you do a bearing retro fit anyway for peace of mind the motors on these things are bullett proof but when the metal from the bearing gets into the oil it can score the bore and piston. If you hear a rumble in the engine stop it or simply Box the motor up before hand and send it to me in a few more kays we will do the work and it will serve you proud for many years to come.

Hi John/Orangeberg, Thanks for all that. I have noticed some small metal particles in the oil when I changed it the other day but no rumbles as yet!

I would like to take up your kind offer to have my engine retro-fitted with the new main bearings. Any idea how much I would be up for to get you to do the job? Also, what would be the best way to "box it up" and send you the engine - by courier or by Australia Post? Any idea what that might cost as well?

Thanks Again, Brian
