2004 FE450 General questions

I just purchased a 2004 FE450 and was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions for me. I looked through the other threads and posts and could not find the answers I am looking for. First of all, what is the secret to kick starting? She dosent seem to want to start when kicking it over. Second is it necessary to have both pet-cocks open when riding or just one or the other. Third is the primary starting supposed to be the e-start and kick as secondary or does it really matter. I am sure I will have a whole bunch more stupid questions later as I become more familiar with the bike but that is all for now.

basic is to be able to start it cold by kicking on 2nd-3rd kick (optimum). even after 3 monts after last run!
do anything to get to this stage (check spark, valves, put new fuel, clean and set carb). my advice is to use e-start only when warm/hot and in situation where you need legs for something else (standing in hard terrain) or you are absolutely exhausted and your heart rate is allready 200bpm.
so, first solve the cold kick, after u have done that, continue with e-start. if this makes problem even after warmup, problem can be e.g. weak battery, charging the battery does not function, bad el. connection somewhere, e-starter motor, flywheel, e.t.c.
if set properly, HBGs 2004-2008 are reliable and undestroyable bikes. read the links bushie posted. good luck

Thanks for all your advice. I do have another question for you or anyone who wants to chime in. I was riding the bike yesterday and noticed when you start to accellerate there is a high pitched "whistling" sound in the lower rpm's. Is that normal for a Husaberg or do I have a problem? Rides good and seems to have plenty of power. Thanks

I haven't heard it in those 'Bergs I've been close to, but there's a "tweeting bird" / pulsating whistle sound that I've seen mentioned and heard on group rides. Is there a bird in/around your airbox? That afaik is normal.

I've owned half a dozen Huabergs and never had any starting problems. I always used the e-start and only recall kick starting one of them once. My remaining Berg is a 1998 FX600 and it doesn't turn over two times before firing right up and it has the infamous Dell'orto carb on it. Jetting, timing, and love are the determining factors.
My old bike makes that low rpm gear whine, but it doesn't whistle.

DezDuster, I need to get another battery because it may not have enough juice with a full charge to turn the motor. I charged it fully when I bought the bike and it still will not turn the motor fast enough to start. I think the battery is just worn out. looks pretty old. Even though it will hold the voltage, I don't think it is putting out the amps to start the bike. The old owner said it was in there when he bought the bike. Thanks

Thanks Edelweiss for the heads up on the battery life. I know the answer is probably somewhere in a thread but is there a particular battery that works best in your experience?

Once you purchase a new battery be sure to purchase a battery tender / maintenance charger or you will be spending all of your allowance on batteries. Always keep it plugged into the maintenance charger when you are not riding.

My battery was also wasted after using the fan too long with lights also on...
Got the MotoBatt MBTZ7S battery, not to expensive.
And, like husabutt said, keep your optimate III charger plugged after every ride.
