Hello All - newbie to this site and to the world if Husabergs...!

I bought my 2003 FE400 2 weeks ago and have problems ever since!! Hoping for some help from this forum!

Problem 1...

I can't get the thing started at all. When I bought the bike, it fired up fine on the electric starter. I put it in the back of my van, drove home 2 hours, lifted it out and again it started fine on the electric starter. I rode it literally 10 mins then didnt touch it for a week. Went back to it and now I can't get the thing started at all. It wouldn't start on the electric starter - almost ran the battery flat, and I couldn't get it to kick either. I;m not that great mechanically (as you can tell..) I drained the carb and cleaned the plug, and it started within 2 kicks. I went for a spin for about 30 mins (it ran fine), stopped the bike - tried to start on the electric starter (which turned the bike over fine) but it wouldn't start even though the bike was warm, then I tried it on the kick and it that didn't work either! Ever since I've had no luck starting it on either the electric starter or the kick starter and I have no idea what it could be.... One question - should it start on the electric starter from cold? Someone told me it was only a warm starter...??

Problem 2....
I think I may have a head gasket issue..... When I did manage to ride the bike for that 30 minutes, when I came home the engine was pretty wet all over - I couldn't really see where it was coming from but it didn't look like the rad. When I left it over night there was a patch of water / slightly oily on the floor - looks like coolant too as it was a bit green.... could this be linked to the starting problem? Is the head gasket a big job? I'm taking to the only Husaberg dealer nearby tomorrow.... fingers crossed its not £££

Problem 3....
OK now you may be thinking I've bought a nail by now!!! 3rd and final problem is more of an annoyance. Basically - the bike is fitted with a tripmaster computer - which I believe is from a later bike? Anyway, it worked - again - the first day I bought the bike! However now it won't come on at all, no matter what. I took the thing off - tested that there was still power doing to it, which there was, but I just can't get it working.... any thoughts? I was thinking about getting a trialtech but don't fancy spending £70.... Does anyone know if a KTM 450 tripmaster will fit? I can get hold of one for cheap if its just a direct swap?

OK hoping someone can help!! Like I say, I'm taking the bike to a Husaberg dealer tomorrow (nearest one is 70 miles away....) But I'd like to have a fiddle today to try and fix it. If it's going to cost me a fortune at the dealer I may just break the bike for spares.

has taffy worked on this bike?
welcome to the site.
sounds to me like you've got carb jetting issues, but you have to deal with all issues seperately. if you pull the plug, what color is the ceramic insulator above the tip? if it gets black quickly, you need jetting work. basically, when you buy a used race bike, you have to make sure its tuning adjustments are right. a reputable person selling it would have already made sure it was taken care of or at least tell you what needs to be done...valve adjustment, carb jetting (replacement of needle and needle jet) problems with ignition (stator failure), auto decomp, etc. all these things can cause a hard starter. get your issues squared away using your kickstarter before you worry about the estart.
as for the leak, you have to find the source. if its from the weep hole in front of the waterpump or from the rad overflow tube or wherever. does it leak even if it has been sitting for 3 hours?
i think the ktm speedo should work, but if yours worked before, i'd just fiddle with it to see if you have a lost magnet or loose / broken wire befor i bought a new one.
you've just got to get to know this bike and all will be fine

Thanks for the advice, you might be right about the weep hole.. it does stop after being left - and I seem to remeber the guy I bought it off saying not to worry too much if I saw water coming out...?

And you might be right about the carb too as the plug is looking a bit black - the only time I had it started recently was after cleaning the plug and draining the carb...

I'm taking it to DCR tomorrow who I think are the main importers of bergs into the UK so hopefully they should be able to sort it out for me! Just hope its not mega £££ (or $$$!)

the seal behind the impellor you can do yourself. it's not difficult. starting issues? mmmmm? nightmare.

your bike is old enough that the camchain has had enough, that the needle has worn in the atomizer and so forth.

i would start with a really good plug like an IXU24. anyway, DCR will look after you!

regards

Taffy

Cheers for the info Taffy. Talk about making me feelin better!!

Joking aside, I understand what you mean though - it's just frustrating that the bike was fine when I went to view it 0 shame it was a private deal.

Heading to DCR in half an hour - staying there whilst it (hopefully) gets fixed...! I'll let you know the outcome....

Cheers
Robin
