Hello, I'm the new owner of a 2003 650 Fs, I did some research about newer Husa's, I learned that pre 2004 Husa's weren't really known for reliabilityand offcourse i wanted a post 2004 bike, but the lack of money 'forced' me to buy a 2003 Husa.

So now offcourse i'd like to know what the weak points are in the 2003 motor, I know of the weak starter motor, but that doens't bother me since is has a kick start.

So what do I really need to check/replace/upgrade so that i can ride my Husa with some peace of mind? I'll be using the bike daily for commuting, so I'd like to have some reliability.

Another question is, can I get rid of all the electrical crap, starter, battery and such but still have a working headlight and taillight? Is it as simple as ripping everything out wich I don't need or is it more complicated than that?

Thanks for your time, Chris.

All the lights work by AC current, so by removing the battery, starter etc, they will still work fine.

The 03 has upgraded rockers that were much better than previous models.

Use good oil, Motorex or Putoline, change it regular, check your valves, and you should be away.

One last thing, check the "owners doc", Taffy has ALL the setup.

I do not think the motor is weak. You should have the longer Mitsuba SM-14 with the Yuasa battery.

Some of the 03s would start cold on the button.

If you intend to race then you can save weight by removing all of that. A capacitor is still a good thing to have:

The rockers were updated on the 03s but they still had the harsh "53" cams in them.

Plan on upgrading to the "08" cam in the 04 and on bikes.

The 03 650 still had the weak crank in it-either keep on top of your mains/rod replacements as per Husa's listed intervals or upgrade to the 06 crank/piston combo.

After further digging into the wealth of knowledge that this offers through the search button, I've discovered that my motor isn't even a 2003 model but a 2002 model! (bear in mind that i bought the bike belieiving it was a 2004 model) I only have one drain plug on the Right hand side of the bike and have an analog speedo. Does anyone have a certain way to comform the year of this motor through the engine block number or any other way?

But anyway thanks for you reply, for now i'm just gonna change the oil, set the valves and have some fun with it during the last couple of weeks before winter and rain start, and open up the block and have a look around inside.

Things that i'll surely upgrade are the rockers and the cam I'll be checking back in with you guys when that time comes for the proper parts numbers and such!

Any other upgrading tips are very welcome offcourse!

Thanks again for the replies.

Both the 03 650 engines I have had only had the unitary oil screen/drain plug, even thoug the parts book lists the seperate magnetic drain plug as an 03 bit.

When I first saw my bike on the dealer floor, it was fitted with an analogue speedo, the digital one was fitted post sale by dealer.

I started having suspicions for a while that my bike was only a reworked 02, but VIN nos, 03 rockers etc allayed my fears

There are probably 03s out there with magnetic plugs, etc but as the 05 550s have shown it is not uncommon for early/late stock to differ slightly in specifications.
