Is the r6 starter that is suggested for this bike from a yamaha r6 if so which r6 starter I understand there are 3 different engines and starters for an r6.
Will it bolt right on or is there other modifications?
I bought an 02 that is virtually brand new I guess the last owner was never able to start it.
The thing is a blast to ride it has great power, handles great, and is street legal so if I can get the starter sorted out will be worth it.
Is there a solution for the ignition / stator?

i'm not sure which starter, or if its just the internals of the starter that can be changed, I would be interested to find this out myself.
I can tell you that changing the auto decompressor to a later one helps starting, also a later type cam and double valve springs will again make it easier.
As for the stator check the tolerances with a meter (they are in the owners doc) and make sure the timing is correct (there is a thread on here). If your stator is faulty you can get them rewound, there are a few people who will do this for you.
Paul.

it's all there in the owners doc under "poor starting" at left on the home page.

Thanks Gentlemen I found the owners doc.
Very informative.
It sounds like the r6 starter from 1999 is a direct fit but needs a new bracket?? From the 05 husaberg???
I hope this is right I havent found anyone around here Calgary Alberta Canada who has any experience with it.
Is this better than the "Beefy" starter from taffmeister it seems like the r6 is pricier but at least is available locally.
Any suggestions?
I am really itching to get this bike running reliably.

Hi,

I fitted a R6 starter to my 2002 fe 650 last month. The bracket end of the starter is longer but the body of the starter seems the be identical. When I bought the bike I was told it had been fitted with the beefier starter. I can't tell the difference in operation betwen these two starters. I suspect the Yamaha starter is actually the beefier starter referred to. I paid $70 for my R6 starter on ebay, drilled two holes in the bracket end of the starter behind the original holes in a position to line up with the bike bracket. I cut the lugs off beneath the original holes and used the lugs and a washer the thickness of a hacksaw blade under the new holes. It packs up nicely.
I am not sure it was worth the money and effort, the new battery, later cam, double valve springs, new auto decom. new kit through the carby, new plug, reco. stator, carefully checked ignition and valve timing. I ground a flat on the manual decom shaft as described in the doc. I think that helped but bike is still hard to start.

Well, I hope I have better luck than you.....I've just started down this path on my 01

I wonder if i could take the back off the standard starter and transfer it to the R6 one to make it 100% compatible?

depends on what it is. the replacements are sm14 mitsubas and they all interchange.
but its not hard to adapt the yam starter if you have the technology to drill a hole in aluminum. :D
