G'day Husaberg owners. Being a keen motorcyclists for about 40 years, it was very saddening to see my neighbors 501 sitting in the carport slowly weathering away to rust. He stopped riding it because it continually left him stranded in the bush because it would not start when hot. I bought it off him and I am now in the process of completely stripping the bike to recondition it.
Any hints about problems with this motor would be greatly appreciated, along with the name of someone with a great deal of knowledge of this bike who lives in New South Wales, Australia. Cheers.

Hi

Doesn't start hot, my guess:

Carb, wrong jetting or worn
Valves
Stator almost gone

if she doesn't start hot SPECIFICALLY it is carb. that is it.

but go onto my facebook page and cry when you see the videos. there's one about 'why Husabergs (about 2001-2003) don't start'.

lotta work and moiney but at least you'll know what you're in for....

cheers

Gday Alby.

Good on you for rescuing an iconic bike!

I have had the same problem with my 2003 FE650 and it was the SEM stator shorting between windings. The laminate was substandard I believe in them from factory and after a little heat expansion, they short and you lose a strong spark.

I had mine rewound by Steve at Bradford Ignitions quite a few years ago and it has been faultless since. Do a bit of a search on 'SEM stator' perhaps and you should find further info regarding this issue.

Other advice above also sound in my opinion.

Best of luck with it,

you do realise that to an Aussie - I am cheaper Damo? I know Maths is in everyone's blind spot but jeez! how come people always put people on to the more expensive option?

I'm sorry mate, not intentional at all. I really wasn't too sure if you sold Sparks' stators. I had an inkling you did....Was just trying to point him in that direction and not the other type of stator.

I did try to put a guy on to you from HFC for a kick sledge though! I've always been happy with what you provide and the service you give, no question and recommend stuff where I know you do it. I now know....

Stator

Does anybody in Australia do theses stator rewinds? On another note, l tried to remove the swing arm but the bolt appears to be locked in with corrosion. Any ideas on how to loosen it? Tried wd40. No luck.

Aerosol we-40 evaporates. If you are using the liquid stuff, lay the bike on its side and apply it for a couple days to let it penetrate in.... do both sides. Time is your friend. Also try tapping the bolt during this process with the nut on so you don't damage threads but if you are going to hit it without a nut on the bolt, use a drift made of brass, aluminum or some other soft metal. It should come out without damaging anything if you take your time.
