2002 FE501 Wont start when hot....

Hello.

Im hoping someone can help. My 501 starts easy as anything when cold, but when hot it simply will not go... Unless you crank the throttle wide open and kick it like you want to kill it. And with my fitness, in a race that is half impossible.

I have never needed to use the choke on my bike, so I assume that it is running rich. I have bought a spruce up kit from taffy and fitted it, so in theory my bike should start no matter what...

In practice, I started messing about with the settings on the carb without really knowing what I am doing.... So I think I brought this on myself.

Can anyone give me a beginners instruction on how to sort this problem?

welcome Janus to the site

A job to say really. you may have on going issues. i don't think your bike is standard is it? a camshaft? i can't recall.

armed though with that specific information at least you have something to target.

my thoughts are tappets too tight
ignition timing

but mostly i get the feeling the carb s rebuilt wrong and something is set wrong like the PS has the rubber 'O' ring missing?

Hello Taff

Thanks for your reply.

I have fitted a race cam that I got from you. And in the carb I have also got the spruce up kit... I will go and investigate the ps o ring....

How do I do the timing on the berg?
Witch screw is the ps? (rooky)

Thanks for all your help and the warm welcome.

the fuel screw is the one on the front corner nearest the head (as opposed to the huge one in the middle aligned to the slide)

as for the timing I would defo go to the doc and study how you make the new line and strobing the ignition can be done by every mech in the world. since the doc we now stick to the timing being 6d BTDC at tickover.

you'll also find the FS chnges if you raise the tickover speed. you can have it running beautifully at idle and it'll be bastard to start. so sometimes i set the PS at idle and then try and start it. i often end up adjusting it just for starting.

What exactly is a spruce up kit? Needle and needle jet?
One tip for the pre 04 bikes I have for hot start is.
A) Pull in the manual decompressor lever
B) Open the throttle
C) Kick the bike through 5 complete cycles with the throttle open
D") release the throttle, bring it to TDC and kick it through smoothly and firmly.

If it does not start on the second kick, repeat the process.

This acts like a hot start button and basically clears all the unburnt fuel and fuel vapor that has built up in the cylinder and intake tract during your hot soak.

You may want to check your stator readings while hot and cold. Valve adjustment is a good place as well. Base idle setting as well. Base idle should be 1800 rpm (yes, that high).

that's old hat ken. all being well most owners over here and near me cxan start them first kick or touch of the button.

a spruce up kit is a new atomiser and needle, PJ (often smaller), a smaller choke jet, 2 rubber 'O' rings.

Thank you for all your help...

I checked the valve clearances before the rally and they where all good.

Personally I think that is is a fuelling issue as someone told me to try and start it with the throttle wide open to get more air in, I did that and she fired up, screaming her nuts off... (so to speak) So I think Berger is on to something.
I am a bit of a perfectionist though and would like my bike to be perfect and if I have to do that procedure every time I stall it in a special test I will lose a lot of time. I have no doubts that it will work though.

Is this something I will learn to live with? Or should it start regardless? I have been told that this is quite common on a big single cylinder machine....

I have to add though... What a machine!!!!!!!!! I raced it for the first time in the ryedale rally this weekend, and blimey... There is nothing you can throw at that bike that it wont handle. ( Except riders lack of talent!)

Thanks again for all your help, I hope that one day I will be able to return the favour. :D
