I have the stock carb on the bike and have cleaned and cleaned it . I have a 185 main and 45 pilot , k51 needle . How many turns out should the mixture screw be and the idle screw. I noticed the needle had some corosion on it near thhe top and cleaned it wich showed some pitting near the top of it. It is on the 2nd slot from the top.

I am having a hard time getting it started. It will turn over and died about every other kick.I had to pull start it and it has some sputtering and surges when I hold the throttle at a constant speed . It is not back firing or anything though. PLEASE HELP. This is getting old. I got the bike about 10 days ago and have pushed it home more than I have riden it.

Sounds like it's just burning fuel in the cylinder, then dying.
Have you tried a fresh plug?
Have you confirmed you're getting fuel to the carb?

My 02' 501 started best with a 35 pilot.

Since the bike is used, I will assume the needle jet is worn as is the needle. They last about a 100 hours or so in normal single track use and they create a mixture problem at idle and partial throttle that gets to be impossible to adjust out.

Replace these parts and your pilot jet also which is the wrong size for the 501.

Mack sure your float level is correct also.

You can download all of the owners , part, and factory service manuals for free on this web site under 'Downloads' in the yellow table on the left of the screen.

Please let us know how it goes and if you have any other questions.

RE: Re: 2002 501 with phm 40 delorto

I am not sure wich model it is the vin # is YU7FE5E312000005 . I think it is the USA enduro model since it has a light and switch for the horn etc.. I was able to get going much better today after another carb clean with air and carb cleaner and it fired 2nd kick and ran great with some surging and hesitation . It stalled an would not start again when I got in the woods of course.

I don't know how to interpret the VIN number, maybe some others do and will step up!

You might tell us where you got the bike, (country, state, province, village etc.) this would better tell us which of the menus to use from the carb jetting list.

I will order a 35 PJ and try that . I took the carb apart and blew / sprayed carb cleaner through it and put the needle on the 3rd from the top and it started 2nd kick but had some surging and somewhat running rough with some black smoke you could barley see . I had no back firing / popping on deceleration though. I rode it for a mile or so then went to the woods and stalled it and kicked and kicked and ended up towing it back to the field where I bump started it and rode it home.
I looked through the atomiser tube and it did not seem ovaled out . I just started it on about the 5th kick today just to see if it would. on the first few kicks it would idle for a second then die but eventualy idled long enough and seemed to be fine for 30 seconds then died and I left it alone because I had somewhere I needed to be . I think I will order the 35 PJ and a new k51 needle because it had some pitting.
What is the best source for parts and support ? This sight has been great help with this beast of a problem I have had with this bike . Thanks to all of you . I will keep yu posted on the progress.

I am on my 3rd DPR8E plug . just to be sure I do not have a bad plug. When I remove the plug it is a sooty black color . I am looking for the Nippendenso 1xu24 plug like Taffy reccomended but can not find one yet. Who should I order a K51 , ans 35 PJ FROM. should I get any other carb parts just to be safe?

I just cranked it and took it for a ride and it is runnibg rough but not under a load just when putting around . I noticed some popping on deceleration. The bike idles fine when cold if I hold just a little throttle on it to get it where the idle should be . I try to speed it up with the screw but seems to have little effect . I have the mixture screw about 3 turns out .

your bike is rich at tickover that's why you don't need choke to start it and why as soon as it's warm it runs poorly.

then when you stall it you need a lean mixture and you have a rich one.....

if you follow the doc the obvious answer is a DR270 or DR272 atomiser. i trust you spotted that....

the lower PJ will help but you'll have a different problem which you'll bitch about. it's called life!

may i suggest again that you put your location and bike in your signature sometime?

regards

Taffy
