Hi guys! First thing you do is to buy a Husaberg, the next thing you do is to find a Husaberg forum, i guess? I understand this forum is full of expertise and im happy to be a part of it!
Im a 23yr old handyman from Bergen in beautiful and rainy Norway, im educated as a Engine Mechanic, working on boat and boat-engines, inboard and outboard. I now work on cars for a living. With that said, enough about me, lets get to the good stuff
-A month ago i bought myself a 2001 Husaberg FE650e, FINALLY!
The engine was sent to Taffmeisters for rebuild and tuning in 2012, atleast thats what i was told. I therefore have the same issue most of us "Berg newbies" experience, starting the monster! It is pretty OK compression in the engine, and the starter engine is just a joke because of the slipping. I've been pulling it behind a car and started it on the 6th gear the few times i've drove it. I would really appreciated being able to start my beast with the kick!!!
-I guess changing the high comp piston to a original one will help alot?
-I also consider replacing the carburetor, or atleast the jets, will this have any improvement on the starting? It's a stock Dellorto PHM 40.
-A week ago i started the bike, drove it for like 1km to the gas station to fill the tank. When stopping on the station i noticed a pretty high thicking noise from the engine, without being able to tell exactly what was at fault. Except for the noises, the engine was running like it is supposed to do, normal rpm, temperature and oil level/vicosity. The only thing i noticed was that i had a hard time getting the gear in neutral. I drove the bike home and parked it for a couple of days, allmost giving it up to someone else.
I gained some motivation, thinking i would have a bigger problem getting rid of the bike than i would have fixing it up.( Not because the bike wont sell, but because im so fking handy :giggle: ) I did some research on the 650 engine and found some typical issues that might be the case here also - The autodecomp mechanism is one of them.
I started removing the clutch cover, controling the chain and marks, every gears/shafts and so. Couldn't find anything that should make that noise, but i found some worn marks in the housing, made by the chain, should i worry about this? The chain was tight and have no damage - Therefor i think this is something that happend earlyer and have been fixed with a new chain and tensioner.
So, when not finding any problems behinde the clutch cover, i startet removing the valve cover. I found a realative worn cam shaft, that i think can be a good idea to replace! Yet, i dont think this is the main reason to my noise.
I removed the cam shaft, and noticed that the Auto decomp mechanisme is "loose"/it moves freely between the stopper and one of the bolts holding the sprocket to the shaft. Shouldn't the spring hold the mechanism and prevent it from moving freely? Anyone have a good picture of how the spring is supposed to be when mounted? I suspect that my spring is broken and missing a piece because it does not look like it has any function as it is now.
(It is the visible end of the spring i suspect missing 4-5mm, causes the spring to rotate and loose it's tensioning. Just a tought, correct me if im wrong)
-Is this the old type of sprocket and decomp mechanisme?
-Im happy for every input that will help me get my Bike up and running again
Sorry for bad grammar, I was in the workshop smoking weed and changing head gaskets when I was supposed to be at school :spin:
Last but not least, a picture of my lovely Berg:
