2001 FE 501e: should I buy?

A Friend of mine has a FE 501e year 2001.
Last year he brought his bike to the dealer for a service. (His bike runs very well)
The dealer told him that the rockerarmroller are defect, and as a result of this there are chippings in the motor.
In the end he had a new rockerarms (´03 model), cam gear, piston, and so on for 2200 Euros!!!

Know he have bought a KTM EXC 520, is very happy about the handling and the keihin carburrettor and want to sold his Husaberg, maybe.

Last weekend he had a new larger (from actuell modell) battery installed, the motor turns very quick, but does´nt start.
With the kickstarter it starts good. What can be wrong?

The motor casing has no crack (as often in this builing year).

The second queston is: should I buy it?

I´m searching for a bike with e-start and better handling in low, difficult passages than my 98´FE 600. Keihin is wellcome.
I´m not a very good driver.

for it:
at first hand.
no races, hardly ever MX courts
only hobby enduro ( 2 h every sunday) and enduro tour in istra and so on.
and nearly a NEW MOTOR!!!

I own also a 2001 fe501e. About the engine is a very good one and I own the bike for more tan 2 (two) years and +- 10.000km and no problem at hall. About the estart, your carburator has to be very tune up for the easy estart. After all this time mine as work half a dozen times. Than I decided to remove it from the engine. Now the bike starts very well on kick, when I go in to deep water, is much more easier to open the end of the carburator etc.etc. I supose that the Kehin carburator didn't give you better startings. You have to made lots of changes on the carburator to work better. If you want a very performant bike go for a 2004 model with japanese electronics and carb. They start very well.
Good luck :) :)

Hi 98:

If you want really good e-starting you need to get an 04 model and up. The 1996-2000 models e-start pretty good though. My 97 e-starts just fine. My 01, well it is truly a restarter on its best day but it kicks so easy I can't complain. A left over 03 with an 04 650 starter motor should be a nice set up but I would still try to get an 04 or 05 if you can swing it.

Hi Husa98!!

I would recommend the 2001 FE501e,
because they didn´t changed too much to model year 2002.
I´ve got a 2002 and as I dismantled my engine I saw that my
engine is in most details 2001 standard.
For example the single bearing counter balancer.
But there is nothing to worry about... ;-)
If the price is really bargain I would also buy a 2001.
A friend of mine has bought a 2001 3 weeks ago on ebay for
2700 Euro. The price was really good.
But I saw he has the often mentioned crack in his right crankcase
in the area of the swingarm bearing. Have a sharp look behind the
sprocket. As I know yet, the most 2001 had problem with the housing.
I have also got a reserve crankcase from a 2001 which had also a
very little hairline crack. I haven´t seen before, only after a sharp look.
Now the crankcase is welded.
In fact the 2001 has 2 disadvantages: The crankkase and the exhaust system. That´s all.

And your friend? I wish him good luck! I heard and experienced a lot of KTM stories.....

Also: Kauf Dir die Husaberg !! Mit dem Estarter können wir mal telefonieren. Schreib mir mal ne Email.

(Translation: Buy the Berg. We can talk on the phone about the estart system. Email me.)

@husby: Please tell me the modification/setting für easy e-starting.

I was riding with the bike on saturday by -2°C outside
Befor 80km approach with the bikes on a trailer - they were very cold.
Not easy to start with kickstart, impossible with the e-start.

I had to kick 3-4 times with choke (unsucessfully), than 1 time without choke, and she starts running for 1 second. Than the same procedure.
The solution was to pull the choke quick after starting without choke.
My opinion is the mixture is to rich.
My tip is that the Needle and needejet are worn out, or the pilot jet is to big.
Whatever, after 1 hour of riding the bike starts very easy by one kick, but never with the e-start.
There was a new battery installed. The battery is from the model year 04.
(My fried told me this is 2 AH bigger than teh 01e modell)

I have no experiance with husaberg e-start, but my experiance with other bikes tells me the motor turns to low for starting. After a few low turns the e-start comes to standstill.
Can it be the ground cable?

Bevor I (better my friend) do the steps from the hard start guide, I think the e-starter must turn powerfull and quick.

Who have good tips for me?

@Hribman: you got a new email.
