2000 Husaberg 501FE---Engine question

Hello all. I am new to the husaberg world. I live in NY so there are not any around and i've actually never even seen one until the day i bought it.

I picked up the supermoto model.

I have a couple of questions. After I get the bike started the engine is noisy. The gent that sold it to me said it's always made that noise. It's sounds like a ticking noise. Is that the way the engines sound? It has full power and it's actually really clean, it's never been off road, so it's really in mint shape. I went against my better judgement since i really wanted the bike but now i'm worried that there could be a problem with the valves or timing chain...maybe it's a normal noise....but i'm hoping someone can shed some light on that issue.

The last question i have is in regards to the e-start. The gent told me that ever since he has owned it, it hasn't worked. He told me the other guy that sold it to him told him that a plastic gear at the end of the starting motor shaft broke. I don't think they made plastic parts in those? Sounds like this guy might of been misinformed..or maybe lied to me.......can anyone help me on that issue?

Anything anyone can help on would be great!! Thanks guys!!

A wealth of information is available under the owner docs in the menu section. Check out poor starting for info on your electric starter. Congratulations on your "new" berg.

Thank you for the tip!!!! It says the owner docs are mostly in regards to 2001-2008 models. Not sure if it applies to the 2000 model?

I did a little crude research on your starter by going to the http://www.husaberg.com website - going to service - then downloads. You can download an owners manual and spare parts manual for your 2000 if you do not already have them. The 2000 spare parts manual list part # 250-240-01 replacement starter. 2001 changed to a different starter #250-249-01. I checked Elite Motorsports (Loveland, CO) for the availability of #250-240--01. They show it as available at $657.66 (with 10% discount). I know that would be cost prohibitive for me. I would recommend you peruse the forums for any possible fix by doing a search for starter related posts. Good luck.

I found a few posts quickly that my help you but am unsure how to make a link. Check out "2000 FE501 starter clutch" and "Re: e-starting problems". Hope they help.

Hi

Check the cam chain for that noise, also might update the blade.

There are no plastic parts at the starter, it doesn't work or it works but slips ?

Thanks Guys. Yeah that is really expensive for the starter. I decided to bring the bike into the closest dealership to have it looked over. When i arrived there today the head mechanic told me that the engine sounds normal. He went and started a New KTM up and it sounded pretty much the same. I told the mechanic that i want him to check over the valves and rockers and do a once over on the bike anyway since i brought it there and adjust everything to spec if it's off. It's better to be safer than sorry.

On the starter, i'm not sure what it does yet. I was told it just turns over but doesn't start the bike at all b/c the gears inside are gone. I have not looked at it b/c the battery is dead. I have a feeling it has the typical electrical problems after reading all the information on this site  . I plan on doing the R6 starter upgrade though once I get the bike back from the dealership. I hate to bring it to a "stealership" but since i have limited engine knowledge I thought it was safer to bring it there instead of messing something up and making it worse...lol

I have a 99 FE 501 and a 2000 FC 501. So basically 2 bikes with the same engine you have in your 2000, one with a starter and one without. I have experience with the starter and what it will and will not do. Before you buy a single part, buy a battery, or even hook up a charger to yours while you test what it will do or not.

If it cranks and turn engine over and your bike starts easily off the kick starter, then it should start. My FE would not start with the e-start initially when I bought it before I sorted out the carb. Now it still has e-start problems when really hot, but always starts cold or at mid temperatures. If you have kick start problems, then sort that out before you spend a bunch of money on a new starter as you will spend the same money afterwards when bike still does not strt

I have always found that the carburation set up on the dellorto's is big part of the starting woes. You can find basic settings all over this forum depending on where you live and the gas that's available there

Good luck.

If you have it hooked to a battery charger or good battery and the starter turns but "spins through" and doesnt crank the engine its likely the starter sprag and bearing are worn out, pretty common issue with these, if its tuned right it should kick start pretty easy, check out some threads on kickstarting and start practicing, once you know the trick it should kickstart fine, and i dont think they are a very quiet engine, at least mine never has been and always been great, theres a fine line between normal noisy and excessive noisy too, i wwould think your mechanic should know. change your oil alot and keep it full..... also this is a racing engine and has low hour service intervals, things get neglected too long and eventually blow up....just something to keep in mind....also follow Hakan's advise and sort out kickstarting before you get to crazy with the electric start diagnosis.

from 1997 on the bikes are similar to 2001-2003 except it took till 1998 to get the stator in the ignition cover and hydraulic clutch instead of a cable.

the later engines are noisy because

valve springs are harsh and cam profile is very harsh
cam chains can rattle due to the lack of support from the tensioner blade
clutch basket is bush mounted and needs to be spot on

it's generally quite hard to get them quiet.

regards

Taffy
