Hi!

Last time when i was riding with my pal we exchanged the bikes for a moment (his FE 400 2000y my FE400E 2001y) I noticed that his Berg is more powerful then my it pulls like crazy from idle ,and it,s completle vicious 8O .
My is smooth like sheep and gives power away more predictably.

Both has the same gear shift 12/48 teeth.

Mayby it,s because he has 38mm dellorto and i have swaped to 40mm dellorto cause my 38 was bad?

Someone can tell my why? :?

Well they are 2 completly different motors. The carb may have something to do with it as well as over all engine condition.

Right.
Tried once a 400 -03 and it was slow as he**, i have two 400 engines one -99 and one -00 and they are real animals compared to the newer 400 i tried

Had a 40 Dellorto jetted for an FC501 on one 400 and did not notice so much diffference to the 38.

Wait until you had an crazy 501 between your legs ;-) pulling like a maniac, they are really powerful.

I have tested 501 when i was looking for the Berg it was in mint condition but after test ride i came off with shaking hands it was waaay to much for my lak of skills. So i ended up with 400 ,in my crew we have one more 400 Berg from 1997y and it is not so brutal as the 400 from 2000y it,s more like tractor.

The 38mm carb will make the motor way more responsive over one with a 40mm carb because of a higher intake velocity. My '96 FE501 that had a 38mm flat slide Delorto was way more responsive when you first cracked the throttle than a friend's '98 FC501with the 40mm round slide Delorto.

Years ago I owned an '84 Husqvarna 500XC which had a 42mm or 44mm (I can't remember which) Mikuni and it was like a big tractor, slow reving and very easy to ride. My next bike was an '87 500XC that had a 38mm Mikuni and it was a real handfull and much more responsive to twisting the throttle. Things happended much faster with the '87. Other than water cooling on the '87 the motors were identicle.

The bottom line here is intake velocity. If both carbs are jetted correctly the one with the smaller carb will have a faster response when first opning the throttle.

When i bought the bike it was with 38mm carb it was little bit more responsive on gas,but flats out on mid and high rpm. And was a bi...ch to start ,some day it just stoped and it was the carb fault i tried everything ,cleaned the carb different setup was no help. So i bought 40mm carb from 2002 fe 501 it was just bolt on and start, just a bit setup on mixture and bike runs great. It feels bit lower on throttle respons but pulls linear no matter what rpm.

I think it is not just the carb it self like jampe and berger said engines must be different.
