hey guys, just wondering if you could give me a little insight into what it would take to replace the starter clutch on my '00 FE501. Just started pretty much a ground up restoration on the bike because it sat around for almost 2 years :( poor thing...anyway, i have a lot of work to do but im going to start with the starter clutch problem. Also, if anyone knows where i could find a svc. manual to download, that would be verrrry helpful.

thanks,
Eric

They don't have a service manual that covers the pre-'01 motors but the internals may be quite similar. Also, the spare parts manuals are sometimes helpful for disassembly/reassembly. I wish I still had my service manual for the '98 models and I could scan it for you.

well thanks anyway. im a mechanic, at a shop with some old dudes that seem to have a way of figuring everything out lol so im sure we'll get it. how about cam removal? got the sprocket bolts out and the impeller off but i cant seem to find a way to get the sprocket off over the decomp. lever. im probably just being a ****** and will most likely have found a way to get it off by the time i get back on here to check for replies, but any info will help...this is my first adventure into the bottom end of a 'Berg...how hard can it be? :cuss:

send me an email and I'll give you a copy.

the earlier starter clutch suffered pretty much like the later ones. the decomp didn't work so the stress made the starter sprague slip.

by now you're looking at probably the inside face of the outer housing looking pretty bad as well. see what you get when you open it. the springs on the early ones appear to be too weak as they were on the 2001+ bikes. I do a spring upgrade but you'll have to look into it and see if you want try it.

you must get the laeter auto decomp and get it WORKING!!!!!

So as i suspected, i was just being ********...found the master link on the cam chain, so i got it down to just the cases that need to be split. How does the ccam sprocket come off the crank? is it pressed on? i got the outter sprocket off but the smaller one on the inside that the cam chain actually rides on is giving me problems now. it looks to me like that needs to come off to get that case off. either that or i could pull the rotor off and get it from that side, but i dont have a puller tool that fits it....grrrrrrrr!
Oh, and thanks Taffy...i sent you an email on your website hope to hear from you soon. Would you happen to know any reliable places in the US to get parts for my bike?

well I have as much as anyoe plus better than new as well. in the USA you have Dan at Motoexotica in Vacaville, CA and Boss off-road up in OR.

get that sprocket off and by a flywheel puller you tight git!

by the way:
"So as i suspected, i was just being ********."
has a different meaning over here!
