Hello, I recently bought a 2000 FE 501. It was kind of an impulse buy. I haven't had a bike in years (I'm 28) alwAys rode 2strokes and I seen this bike for sale for $1300; figured I couldn't go wrong and bought it:cool: so I got home and it seems there are a lot of haters out there trashing these bikes. Can anyone shed some light on me. Do I have a good year? What are things to look out for? What should be gone through before taking her for a rip? (Never had 4stroke) anything you could tell me to help me appreciate this bike and build my confidence in it would be great.... the guy I got it from bought it brand new in 2000 said he took it out once a year for an up north trip. Changed oil at the end of ever ride. He says that's the only thing he's ever done to it! So I'm a little worried. So justly of all what should I go over and look out for! : ) thanks guys! (No electric start)

I have an 01 bike. From everything I've read you have a good year. Last year before they changed to the new motor. I would check nuts and bolts, change all fluids, check the valves, fresh gas and give her a go. You also might want to pull the stator cover and give the stator a light coat of petroleum jelly. Have fun. After a few hours, change the oil, see how it looks and go over everything again.

ya, what he said. it's always a good idea to know your bike; especially the condition of the high wear items that could cause you problems on the trail. doing a top cover check along with a cam chain tensioner pull and check the cam follower bearings as well as the cam bearings. when the cct is off, see how many clicks out from max you are to determine cam chain condition.
not much you can do with the stator other than starting to look for a replacement / spare.
when you do the first oil change, you are looking for metal particles that are magnetic. the aluminum shavings are harmless in small quantities.

you can now find out all the info here on what goes on them. spares are difficult to cource from the factory but I have sourced most of them.

give my web shop a visit, email me, say who you are and we'll run through a few things that will help.

the rule is a bit like the one on the guy with the bad hip.

you start with a bad hip and walk funny, next thing your knee goes and then...

keep it straight and right from the off....

So it sounds like I need to go through the timing chain, bearings , and check the valves. That's a good start. It sounds as if the stator sucks on the 2000 burg. Is there a replacement for those from a newer model or something?. Also are there any other goodies that I should or could nab off of newer burgs? I took the bike out today -I couldn't help myself- the bike was a dream. Just goes through everything with ease. Seems there isnt much of a first and second gear but I figure out way pretty quick after I found a few hills and mud puddles. Lol. This bike seems pretty awesome boys! I would like to see maybe a little more power out of the corners but whatever. the only other thing I wanted to throw out there was; so there's a guy on the thumper forum saying that he fixed the top end oiling prolem by adding an oil line to the top end and problem solved..... any light you could shed on me for this one? Also, what are the best upgrades(bang for your buck) I could consider. Also thank you so much for taking the time to get back to me! I'm excited to be a part of the husaburg tribe. Love the stories behind this brand. Lol. I thought I read somewhere in here that a dude got two bottles of beer with his freight order husaberg. Made me think I picked the right brand. And also.... Taffy! Thank you for the personal invite to get a hold of you. I will be getting a hold of you in the next week or two. My schedule is crazy right now! Thanks tho man! Very appreciated!cheers boys!

you need to get hold of the rad shrouds/scoops NOW while you can, they no longer do yellow but I think that you only want blue anyway. go get - now!

are you leccy start?

the bottom half is relatively good. have a look at repalcing stuff in the carb already. I do a spruce up kit, read up on it on ebay but basically you'll find that if you keep turning and turniong and turning on the starter you'll end up needing a new hip -ya dig dude?

you need the later auto decomp and spring but to do that you need to get a KTM cam from a 2001-2 from a 400-520. get it complete with w/p seals the lot. you kepp the cam bearings with the seals, you keep the cap weith the two seals

buy a used steel sprocket and fit it over to the KTM set up. buy my modified auto decomp spring.

so you get the KTM set up, you get a husaberg steel cam and a decomp spring from me.

put that lot together and your starter will spin blindingly fast and catch and start.

do the carb spruce up. get an iridium plug.

go for a CTZ7s battery or YTZ7s etc or even a Lithium Ion etc.

get the ignition timed 1mm to the left of centre as per 'the doc'

sure starting is what you need. set the tappets right.

Alright! I'll get some pictures posted as soon as I get it all cleaned up!

Taffy, was that post for me? I'm guessing it wasn't.

If anyone is interested this is what I found out about top end motor issue

"Cam follower bearings will go out theirs an oiling problem on pre 2004 bergs .when mine went out i replaced ,.but i put in an oil line from the oilfilter area up to the top to get more oil to those rockers .i was reading other owners saying they were keeping an eye on the new bearings and it was reaccuring again so just replacing the bearings doesnt solve the problem"

interesting....

there is no oil pressure feed to the head from 04 , splash lube only.

not sure which year/model it started but my 02 650 has pressure feed to the rocker arms and squirters for the cam/cfbs

I think what he's saying is that that was the problem. There was no feed to the heads so he made his own. : )

yes i did that as well for my 08

the point i wanted to make was that in some years pre 2004 there is oil pressure lube to the rockers and cfbs from the factory

which is contradictory to his statement at least in respect to the years since the factory removed the pressure feed after 2004 :D

doesn't matter.. oil feed to rocker arms is better in my experience as well.
