I have a 2000 fc 501 with very low hours. havent hardly ridden the bike since buying it
three years ago. are there any weak points on this bike i sould know about? any updates that need to be performed? I broke first and third gears in the trans. Is this common on this bike?

I don't know about the tranny problems, I haven't experienced any probs but notchy shifting from mine, but it would be good if you checked the cam sprocket, in 2000 they used an aluminum sprocket, which wears out fast and sheds aluminum currently the bergs run a steel sprocket which bolts right in, you will need to order the newer cam sprocket bolts or shorten the old ones or else they will hit the decompression system, also the cam chain used in 2000 wasn't the best so that will need to be swapped out too. along with a new chain slider, if you choose to replace that (I didn't on mine because it had almost no wear). I have also heard that the old style rocker arms were a problem area, I haven't had trouble with them, but plan on replacing mine in the future. Hope this helps.

it's rare to break the transmission. very rare. so unless you have seen the broken parts already i would keep an open mind until you have the engine down and see it.

thanks fo rthe advise on the cam gears and chain. I already torn the engine down and have had the broken gears in my hand. it broke a tooth off of both the first and third gear
sets. couldnt find an obvious casue. all the other gears look ok and the only shavings in fthe motor and trans were the two boken teeth. If you know of anyplace that I can get a used trans or even a whole motor please let me know.

thanks

i respectfully suggest that the difference isn't enough to warrant looking a gift horse in the mouth on this occasion!

i got '99 Fe 501. i was told a horror story from a scrutineer at an enduro that early bergs can snap camchains and send it out through the casing. mine has the newer chain and sprocket so I have had no problems. the engine on E-bay went to Italy but that was ages ago. I agree with Taffy the differences in the 2 boxes is not really a prob as srocketing will smooth the ratios!
