Could any one help? I have a hi low switch on my starter switch which i believe is a 2 stage ignition. Could someone explain to me exactly how to use it while riding?

welcome to UHE berganator. hope you get all you need here. please add where you're from and what you ride to your signature or under your nik.

if you look to your left you'll see 'the owner's doc', if you go read that for a week and don't come back, it'll have been worth it i can assure you.

anyway, for now, this is what it says:

Technically, the book says that one should use "HI" when starting (Parsko).
When flicking the switch with the strobe working, you can see the flywheel visibly at a totally different point at tickover. I dyno'd the two settings and despite the broshure blurb that the difference was only at low revs, i can report that in LO I gained at the bottom and lost at the top: the opposite of the HI position.

Thanks for the advice 8) . will give it a try when my stator arrives back from sparks! I have been browsing the owners doc and have learnt a lot but a little too much to take in at once! I have a fe501 03 and im from Preston, England.

Hi,

What the HI/LO switch is designed to do is to change the slope of the advance period of the timing, that is the timing will advance quicker and also reach full advance at lower revs. The timing setting at idle (ticking over) and at higher revs should not be affected. The idea is to give a more aggressive character at HI setting. You can notice a difference if you keep the motor at a steady rpm a little bit over idle and then alter the switch. Try it and judge if you need it. On my FE501 2002 I lowered the ignition a little bit by adjusting the stator and got smother characteristic that suited my driving skills.

Hi Christer,

Nicely put, one setiings gives the torque at the bottom end and the at the top.
Is there a big diffenece between the two settings I've heard people say it doesn't make much difference it's more of a gimic?.

Theberganater your ignition went out yesterday should have it back early next week.

Sparks,

On my 2002 Fe501 it was a notable difference between HI and LO. I'm now running a new FE450 and this has a totally different character even thought they should almost be the same regarding horsepower. The 450 is much smother in the lower register but still has the punch at high revs. I assume that the biggest difference here is the Dellorto versus the Keihin. On both cycles it is possible to reprogram the CDI. I assume that the top driver uses this for personal settings and also to adjust to different ridings conditions.

Simply put if your racing a super cross or arena event and you start to case the jumps , move the switch back to HI . On the other hand if you are casualy riding a lake edge trail and taking in the sites LO is great .
MX tracks it depends on the length and degree of technicallity , if in doubt keep it on HI .

if you are slogging it in mud, if the feild is wet or even moist, if you're climbing hills = go for LO. as i've said though: despite the factory blurb - you do lose one to gain in the other (some of us remember the broschures that said it only affected up to half revs...

on my '02 fe650e there is a tremendous difference.
i may set it on low towards the end of the day when my
arms are tired of getting ripped out of the sockets.
also use it on the slower whoops, since an 'error' doesnt cause such
bad end results.
my swith has been custom modified [by my foot during a crash] so
it a little hard to get to. i actually like it better this way since it cant
be moved accidentally.
tuts
