Proud of of a new Husaberg fe550e 3 weeks ago.First time away from Yamaha in 15 years. My first ride out i liked the bike so much i talked one of my ride buddies to trade in his Ktm 525 in on one also.

8O My buddies 2 ride on his new 550e in the first week, came to an abrupt end when he restarted his engine after waiting on the side of a hill for other riders.Main crank bearing failure...less than 150km on the clock.

Today I went out on my new 550e,3 weeks old (210 kms on the clock)
stop onto the side of a hilly track, restarted after riders blocking the tracked cleared and guess what...lower engine death rattle.Rolled back down the hill after only being out for 10 mins, game over...

Whats going on???

:( Sorry for your troubles aussiehussa
........It seems you safer from the trouble that affects the 2%?? of husabergs..................!!!
Have a look at this site and you will find a lot of info on the subject some valid some not make your own conclusions and hope you have some serous luck you will need it.

Ps happen to me 3 times.

Aussiehussa,
Time to start using your 1 year warranty.
Check your PMs for info.

dale lineweaver-the site guru has the main bearing housing checked for alignment and rebored to suit. only then are roller bearing mains used. otherwise folk slip back to the ball bearing mains of old.

this is a total cure!

check out what kinda oil you boys are using. state it here please if you can.

regards

Taffy

re: when the dragon quits breathing fire...

AussieHussa,

Although it's not widespread, we've heard of it happening enough for some distribs and dealers to start changing out main bearings to more tolerant specs to alleviate the symptoms. As taffy noted, Dale Lineaweaver stated that the problem stems from the fact that the journals aren't properly aligned between the two case halves, and it's wreaking havoc on the engines in question.

Your first step(both of you) should be to immediately contact your dealer to get under the umbrella of your nifty one year warranty. Providing nothing happened to the bike to take away the warranty, you should be covered(this problem is not unknown to the manufacturer).

Your second step after that is to become a mean consumer. Don't settle for a rebuild. If it happened once, then that means you both have cases that aren't aligned properly. They could realign the bores, but I don't see them going to that trouble. INSIST that you get a new engine. It's not unheard of, and it's not an unreasonable request given the circumstances. I don't doubt that you'll get some grief from them, but for the sake of your future happiness with your bike, you really need to stand up for this.

3)rinse
4)repeat

The bikes really are great bikes, providing you don't get a "factory lemon". Like I said, it's a very rare occurance, and I'm sure you'll both be happy as soon as you get your dealer/distributor to pony up the required solution.

thanks,

Is this verified? 2% or is it more?
Since we seem to have no warranty at all in Scandinavia this is important to know!

Good advice from schwim.
When you are supplied with your NEW engine, ensure that the 1 year warranty on the NEW engine starts over again on the engine, from the date it was installed. That was the service I recieved on my 03 650.

Update,
Heard from my dealer today, who has checked the bike. The starter motor gears had failed and its was loose teeth material floating around this side of the engine.
This was the cause of the death rattle. They have also checked and found not enough crankshaft endfloat 0.3mm (spec's 0.45-0.55mm)

The dealer is going to split the cases and re-shim the crankshaft to correct this.I would prefere this new engine not to be pulled down, but i dont want a bearing failure like the other bike.

The other husaberg which had the bearing failure, completey locked up.
They have re-build his bottom end and have reshimed his crank already.
The bike was given a test on the week-end and so far so good...

We are running the motorex power synt4t oils.

WE are both now very nervous that we have a batch of lemons or Friday afternoon built engines, and dont want a bandaid repair. :(

Aussiehussa,
There was a warranty bullitin that pertained to checking or changing the starter clutch. Was this required for your bikes and was it done? Also I was under the impression that the case issue was focussed on pre 04 engines.....nsman

I'm not a mechanic, nor do I play one on the Internet, but Ricky Bozarth explained this to me quite succinctly. I'll get him to answer this thread.

Dead '05 550FE

Add one more '05 550FE to the disabled list. With about an hour on the clock metal sounds started on the clutch side. Shut it right down, waited a minute and hit the magic button - it lit right up but almost immediately locked up.

The free wheel hub is missing 2 teeth along with the nub on the end of the shaft. Bad heat treatment? Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions? I will be contacting the dealer tomorrow. Thanks.

when the **** hits the fan...

man, when it rains, it pours, huh?

400, I don't have any suggestions for you, sorry... I do however ask that you keep us informed of your dealings concerning the warranty, how it's honored, etc. I'm curious to see how your experience works out.

I'm very sorry for the troubles you guys are having. Hopefully, the man/distrib/dealer will take care of you w/out much hassle.

thanks,

Update no2,
My engine failure;
Called in to see my dealer and inspect my new 550e lower engine in pieces.
The damaged isnt major in my engine.the gear torque limiter (part no 800.40.021.100 *page 67 fig 21 in spare parts manual) had stuck and not released causing two teeth too strip on the drive gear and the outer clutch hub to have a couple of chipped teeth.
The dealer is going to replace the damaged gears and torque limiter, the reshim the crank endfloat to give correct factory clearance another 0.15mm.

Hope this is the end of my bad luck so far,the dealer has been most helpful with my inquires and information reguarding the failure.

My mates failure;
The cause of the other new 550e engine is believed to be caused by insufficient crankshaft endfloat, causing one main bearing failure and lockup.(part no 800.30.019.000 *page 55 fig 83 in parts manual)
The dealer has replaced the failed bearing and reset the endfloat back to spec's.So far after one ride,it's been ok.

I hope for his sake, and mine the repaires are the last problems we have.

Great to hear you are getting looked after and that you are able to ride your new bikes again. keep us posted.

Dead '05 FE550E

Thanks for the condolences Json.

Here is update #1.

Problem seems to have started with a failure of the free wheel hub 800.40.025.000. Jennings ATV in Pennsylvania / Husaberg distributor had that part in my hands in 2 days. Would have brought the bike back but its a nine hour round trip. Upon re- assembly I noticed the clutch cover did not sit flat on the engine case. The cover seems to racked about .7 mm.

Closer inspection shows that the broken off pieces from the free wheel hub
burred the kick starter shaft and chipped the engagement sledge. Also one of teeth on the outer clutch hub is slightly marred.

The Jennings ATV is picking up the bike this Tuesday evening. I'll keep you all posted.

2 New Dead 550's

Update #2

Received the 550 back on Friday June 10th and put about two hours on it over the weekend. All seems well so far. Husaberg had all the parts in the dealer's hands in two days and the dealer rebuilt, test rode and drove 3.5 hours to bring the bike most of the way back to me.

The side cover turned out not to be racked as I previously thought. The engagement sledge became deformed from the broken parts being where they didn't belong -- this caused the kick starter assembly to raise up and not let the side cover sit down flat.

I can't say enough about the dealer -- Jennings ATV in Pennsylvania -- the initial setup was excellent and follow up service was beyond what I would expect. In all, he drove about 14 hours in conjunction with this repair. Dave Jennings and his wife Kim are a pleasure to do business with.

It will take positive stories like that to turn the tide of public opinion. Glad it worked out and a bad experience was made better by a dealer that was willing to go the extra mile(s)! (pun intended)
Remember to support the good dealers guys!

Man!! That's fantastic that your dealer drove to pick up your damaged bike for you. That's the kind of customer service stories that will get people buying Husaberg's.

And, as I have stated before, if there is a known problem Husaberg stands behind their product.

Glad to hear our Mate's down under are getting good treatment as well. Sorry to hear that they had the problem in the first place.

I have about 47 hrs and 1000 miles on my 2004 FE550E and it's running great. I love that bike!!

Hi All,

David Klein here. Thanks, Dale, for getting me to sign up. Yikes, horror Husaberg stories. I hope all y'all with 550s get em fixed up. I have a 2005 Husaberg 550. It went back to Cycle Shack in Lubbock Texas to check the e-starter slipper clutch torque on the factory recall. It was perfect.

So far my bike has performed excellent. I have ridden my bike in two enduros, a few days in Baja, started a GNCC (that I got a left wrist failure from) and am now heading off to Ohio for the ISDE Qualifer.

The only problem I have had was when I was jumping big logs in New Mexico the bike went totally upside down. This filled the top end with oil which I was required to use the manual compression release to expel. It blew oil out the exhaust and then was FINE!

This is my fourth Husaberg, starting with a 1995 501, a 2001 501 and a 2002 470. All have been excellent bikes. The new carb and kokosan ignition are really great and my bike starts with the E-button every time. I can't wait for my new Lineaweaver jet kit to make the bike run even smoother.

I come from the old Husaberg School and use Castrol 5W 50 Full synthetic oil. I change it every ride, the filter every third ride.

I really hope y'all get your Bergs back up and working well. The new waranty is really great. You won't get that on a Rice Burner! And there are plenty of horror stories about 250 Fs suckin valves!

Hej,

Deekay
