1st Thread: Interchanging Parts?

Hi all. I have a 2008 FE 650 Supermoto that I love, and its not going anywhere.

I'll add some photos If I can. I'm new to the site. But the reason why I'm posting. I recently just picked up a 2002 FC550 with an extra parts bike. The main bike had a bad kicker shafter or spring. I have literally rolled it into my garage, and not assessed it. I bought it as a "mechanical special" you might say. But its 98% complete.

I was considering attempting to getting it back together, assuming that's the only real issue, but I have read online that "2001, 2002, 2003 Husabergs were so bad they almost drove the company out of business, due to unreliability"

That was the post that really got me.

Now im back to figuring out if things like engine cases, clutches, wheels, etc are interchangeable with my 2008 FE 650? Does anyone know what years work for what? I am guessing someone has figured this part out. Just trying to figure out what to do. I appreciate any insight.

Hi MotoPhotog,

Welcome and you've made a fine choice of motorcycle

Quite a few differences between the two. Best to read the owners DOC, and the 'definitive main bearing thread' Lots of great explanations and info there.

Ive owned my 03 FE650 for 10 years or so and its been fine for the most part. Few problems here and there but in my opinion, they can be upgraded no problem. Some parts are interchangeable with KTM RFS models and this is a bonus.

2002 models: the major weaknesses as far as I'm concerned are the SEM ignition, lack of crank end float and the conical valve springs/cam. Like I said, can be sorted. There are other issues though

I'll leave it for some others with more experience than me here to advise further, but don't be put off by any of them earlier models. These bikes will be collectors one day, especially with the popularity of vintage MX. Like you, mine aren't going anywhere either.

Good luck
