1999 Husaberg FE600E Starting Problems

Hello,
I just bought a 1999 Fe 600 e
The bike is very hard to start. The starter is not currently working. I can get it started about every five tries, each try taking about 5 min.
I talked to a ktm mechanic that said the early fe 600s have a problem with the starter failing and the parts working their way into the engine. When the engine backfires the starter does not spin fast enough.
I need to check the valves to see if I can start the engine without the starter. Can anyone confirm the starter will ruin the engine? Or should I get the starter working?
I'm not very mechanically minded yet.
Thanks

I have never heard of the starter ruining the motor. I don't see how it could. Just to clarify, you are able to start the bike using the e-start sometimes? Are you able to kickstart it? How hard is it to depress (kick) the kickstarter? Are you able to spin the motor enough to where it should start?

When the engine backfires the starter does not spin fast enough.
Could you clarify your statement? Do you mean that when using the starter it does not spin fast enough to start it and will then at some point backfire ending your e-start attempt?

The auto decomp fails on these engines and then the starter has to fight full compression. You need an upgraded auto decomp and modified spring.
The carbs were wrong from the factory gate. I do an easy start kit.
You can't start them whatever happens with more than 1mm of choke.
The flywheels were marked wrong and need remarking. The timing should then be done with a strobe and I do a video on how to do this on the Taffmeisters Facebook page.
I do a brilliant kickstart sledge mod that gets rid of the slop in the kickstart arm.
Never heard of the starter chucking stuff in the engine. They need an Iridium plug once they are set up.
Valve clearances, you must be able to rattle and make a Morse code on the arms at TDC and for it to be heard at the rear licence plate and no further.

cheers

there were a lot of rumors going around about backfiring and eating starters in the 1st series engines ("don't mess with the jetting").
and like taf says, the carbs needed work. made me nervous with my 600 elduro back in '98, but never did cause a problem.
it was why the 2nd series engines got a torque limiter in '01 that REALLY caused problems

Indeed, the new Torque Limiter didn't work and may have well been one solid gear. The factory revised the TL and installed them under warranty for all 2001 models.

correct, a solid unit and no good to man nor beast. 2002 had a 'proper job' fitted.
