Hey guys! It's been awhile. Well, like an idiot I sold my '05 FE650. I really wanted to street plate it but it wasn't happening here in good 'ol Kommiefornia.
Well, I have come across a plated '98 FE600 e-start bike thet looks pretty decent. According to the owner it has something wrong with the starter drive system. Not electrical, something mechanical. That's fine, I'll fix that.
I need to know if there's any underlying problems with this particular year. What can you guys tell me?
I did do searches a few times but didn't come up with anything really relevant.

Thanks!

i'd look into how much it's gonna cost to replace a sprague and if you can even still get them.
cases split for the replacement.

Hi
Here the OEM sprague its 150euro, and you don't know about the gears, they can be trashed.
You have to add át least the base gasket.
I,ve contacted with a Chinese guy that make one sprague that I think it will fit for 15euro but I just didn't had the guts to buy it, because if it breaks inside, you don't want to see the result. Taff is working on something but still don't know the result.
This year is as good as any other, for me one of the best, it's almost the end of 10 years developing one concept. It's got issues like any other.

I owned a kick-start only '96 FE501 for years and it was very east to start, as long as you followed the correct procedure and the carb dialed in right. The '02 FE650 I used to have had to be kick started when cold and was easy to start if you did it right. My '05 FE550 also kick starts easy and when the weather is cold I usually use the kick starter anyway for cold starts. The proceedure that I started with my '96 FE501 was to use the k/s lever to get the piston up to tdc, use the manual compression release lever to get the piston just past tdc, let the k/s lever return to the top and give the bike a solid kick (with my '96 501 I didn't have to use the manual c/r lever since it had a semi-automatic c/r mechanism that operated off the k/s lever). The '98 models with electric start did not have a handlebar mounted manual compression release (if I remember right) so you will have to rely on the automatic cam actuated automatic compression release, but if done right, the bike should start easy.

A lot of starting problems can be solved by installing a new pilot jet (modern gas clogs them up if they sit for a long time and not run) and making sure the fuel screw is adjusted correctly.

I would have thort if ya gunna pull the jet to change it then ya may as well clean it an save some money.....

My little used unicam used to be a bugger for clogging the pilot whilst sitting in the lock up, I was getting sick of having to clean the carb before riding.
One day in a moment of clarity (unusual) I turned the gas on when I put it the trailer to take it home from storage and the bugger ran like a top with no blocked pilot.................
The 20 min trip on the trailer with fuel sloshing around soaked and absorbed the usual residue.

just a thort.

I have not had much luck getting pilot jets completely cleaned out as the orfice is so small and, believe me, I've tried.
