1997 Husaberg fe400 gear or carb issues?

hello all, I just bought a 1997 Husaberg fe400 and its a blast to ride. the bottom end has a ton but once I get half way through the RMPs it starts to bogged down really bad.... I am new to Husaberg so I don't know much about them mechanically. my guess would be these bikes are geared low for low end power and that is why I cant reach the top end power? but could it also be how the card is jetted?? it primarily happens when im in third gear and up, max MPH I would guess is around 50.... I would like to be able to ride it on the street as it is plated and "street legal". if anyone as any idea I would greatly appreciate any advice!!!

thanks,

Riley

When you say it bogs do you mean that when it reaches a certain RPM in the higher range of say 5000 + RPM and more the engine starts to die and then comes back to life when the RPM's decrease?

For what it's worth, that description doesn't really match any Husaberg I've ridden. I'm pretty sure that once you have this fixed it'll have a strong, linear pull building to the very top. A 2005 450 I've ridden has a meaty low-end and then revs to the moon, very insistent and scary power to the top.

Offhand, I'd suspect a dirty carb - I'd want to give a +1 on Husabutt's question .?

first thing i'd do is replace the needle and needle jet. i had a '98 that did the same.

the motor just starts sputtering once I try and push past 5000 RPMs it feels like and sounds like its either getting to much fuel or not enough. I use to have a DR200 and took the carb apart on that and it was really easy, but I have heard bad stories about the carbs that are on these early Husabergs. I took the bike to BOSS off-road in Portland and he does good work its just hard for me to get there is this a job your average joe could do??

thanks for the post guys!

its never died when im higher up in the RPMs and just really sputters and then once you bring the RPMs back down its fine.... which is what initially made me think it was the carb.

I'd think that basic maintenance would be quite manageable, yes! Having done a rejet on my DR-Z knowing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING at the time :)

I don't know if Sudco deal in Dellorto parts, but if they do, then they're very knowledgeable and a pleasure to deal with via email (and on the phone I think too?)

That said, there are specialists in these older exotics in the US. Boss as you mention, and MotoXotica as far as I know. And more? They'll surely be able to point you in the right direction, if not directly mail you those few parts I'd guess you need to get that carb going pretty decent.

Good chance you have carb issues. I would want to start with a fresh spark plug and retest just to rule that out. As far as the carb goes the Dell Orto is a pretty good carb but like everything else needs maintenance. As Ned pointed out the needle and seat do wear out and should be changed every once in awhile. Taffmeisters has all the parts you need all in one convenient place. I would get his:

110436 Dell Orto Spruce Up Kit.It has the needle and seat (atomizer) that wears out and causes issues.

100411 Dell Orto Gasket Kit. The float bowl will probably start leaking once you take it apart and reassemble it. It contains that gasket, all of the other gaskets and a fuel filter I believe.

100394 CD1 Jet. This sits under the pilot jet and was not included with all carbs but helps with starting. If yours doesn't have it I would add it.

Taffmeisters - Husaberg, KTM, Husqvarna, Gas Gas, dirt bikes - servicing, tuning, rebuilds, parts

Before you spend any money I would make sure that all of your carb vents and gas cap vents are unobstructed. Check your fuel line that crosses over the frame from the fuel pump to the gas tank. With the seat off, It should move freely and not be pinched anywhere. You can see a groove in the tank that it should fit into. When properly installed the fuel line crosses over on top of the air filter a bit.

sounds to me like ignition advance fella? it doesn't sound like it has enough?

I suggest that you should find true TDC and mark it on the flywheel with a tipp-ex pen. then get an ignition strobe and set the ignition timing at idle/tickover. it should be 6d BTDC.

regards

Taffy
