1997 FX600E kick start activated decompression system

I had always thought that the factory just forgot to install the kick start activated decompression system in this bike. I just assumed that someone forgot to drill the hole in the case by the kick starter for the lever and the next person down the line just let it go. Now I am not so sure. Upon studying the parts manual it appears that the e-start left hand crankcase does not have those parts listed. Can anyone confirm this? The bike is impossible to kick start. What was the factory thinking? Am I missing something? (other than parts) The only decompression system this bike has is the auto. Is this bike a fluke or are all 97 e-start models this way?

A nut and hex screw was placed where the decompression valve lifter should be. The only hint that something is missing is the manual decompression cable holder just sitting there doing nothing (waiting for a cable).

Hi Husabutt,
This completely standard! They really do believe that the electric starter will work 9/10 times. Kicking this sucker is an art that should be practiced. I had one (actually the only one to come to Australia back then) of them back in 1997 and thankfully the E/starter was fine and only had to kick the beast occasionally, but once you have the knack it's fine! These were a good durable model back then just do your setup properly and enjoy.
Best Regards
Sutto

i had a 98 fe600e and a 400e that were just like that, no k/s cable or handlebar cable. very rarely had to kick the 600, but it was possible. the auto worked as it should. same with the 400e. i also had a 98 400 kickstart that had both the auto and the kickstart cable. felt different than kicking the 400e. probably the auto wasn't right, because if you didn't click in the kickstart decomp you couldn't kick it.

Thanks for the reply gents. I can't beleve that this is "normal" but it must be.

I cannot even budge the kick start lever. The e-start has been almost completely reliable except for the starter relay going out. I may try to at least hook up a handlebar mounted decompression lever.

somethings funky because when i had to kick my 98 600, (it was usually cold and the bat was puny), it felt like you were kicking thru mud, but it would move. maybe your kicker is jammed? you should be able to push it thru by just standing on it and waiting for it to work its way thru compression if there is a problem with the auto decomp. if not, then i would think it was time to look at the kicker (or just keep a good battery in place  )

I had the same problem with my '00 FC600 when the kickstart-operated decomp cable snapped.
Could barely get the kicker to move, even with my 15 stone standing on it!
It must be a problem with your auto decomp weight.
I assume the same is true for my bike.
I fitted a new kicker decomp cable and was back in business!
I also ordered the parts to fit a manual decomp to the handlebars, but the bracket was designed to fit to the hydraulic clutch reservoir (which my bike doesn't have).
For the moment, I'm happy to rely on the kickstart decomp cable only, but will have to sort the auto decomp weight at some point.
Good luck!

Had the rocker cover off and sure enough the autodecompression device spring has seen better days. The weight just flops over when you spin the motor. As a side note the adjustment screws in the rocker arms lost 3 of the swival faces that contact the valves when I pulled the cover off.
