I just bought a 1997 Fe 501 and need to change the head gasket. My two questions as of right now are:
1: How do you find dead up right center for the timing chain?
2: How do you take off the timing chain?

Thank you for your response and helping a new owner out.

the timing chain (known over the pond as the 'camchain') should display a split link at some point. remove the tensioner, then the link and hold up with string/lock wire or whatever. if there's no link then you'll have to try and find a different coloured link and that'll be the 'soft link' or AKA the rivet link.

I don't advocate an old chain with a new link....not good so maybe a new camchain is in order.

as for the timing on those, use a zip tie through the plug hole os similar and try and get TDC. you'll find a small mark on the flywheel and one where the ignition cover fits on the engine at around 10.10 on a clockface. the two should line up together when you feel you have TDC.

the camshaft in the meantime will sit symetrically either up like Mickey Mouses ears or down...the same. the lobes should sit parallel to the cylinder head's top surface.

it should be perfect. I use a ruler diagonally across the lobes to exagerate any differences.
