1996 fe350 stator

Hello

This is my first visit on this forum. I was referred here by a Husaberg dealer. Any help I can get is greatly appreciated. So here we go -

I just purchased a 1996 FE350. I was told the stator was probably bad, but I think I got a fair deal on the bike so I went ahead and bought it. Now I understand why I got a pretty good price. I saw on some posts that some people are interchanging KTM stators. I was wondering if anybody knew which year and CC, model, etc. interchanged on my particular bike.

I really don't want to have to part this bike out, but I'm not in a position to sink a lot of money into it, hoping the problem gets fixed.

Once again, thanks a lot if anyone can help. I'd love to get this bike moving. This is my first two-wheeled project and I really don't want to fail.

Hi,

Welcome to the UHE site, you will find a lot of useful and interesting stuff on here. Regarding your 350 stator I could wind one up for you if you want. Just let me know.

Regards

Sparks.

Hi and welcome

You have here in this forum a lot of info about this SEM stators, I don't know anywere that has so much info like in here, and that is because they give you problems.
There are 2 SEM stators in bergs, MKI that its until 98 and MKII after and until 2003. Yours is the MKI.
You can test your stator with a multimeter and you have the correct values in the owners docs (MENU TOP LEFT).

For the problem there are varius solutions, you can go to a repair, from sparks (as you allready know)
http://www.uk-motoplat.com/ or Taff http://taffmeisters.co.uk/ (its the same)
or from http://www.elektronika-motocyklowa.pl/index.html
and there are some more.
Or you can go to a non OEM replacement in http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/erol.html#1X0
or http://www.hpi.be/

Can't tell you the perfect solution, because I think there is no perfect solution for the SEM stator !!
I use the SPARKS rewind.

You can also use the KTM LC4 stator from 96 to 2002, that is the same.

Hope this can help you

Thanks for the response! I'll try to get this stator tested today to be sure it's the culprit. I'm in the U.S. so my big question about the SPARKS rewind is cost. I did a quick international shipping quote from here to Spain and about fell off my chair. The LC4 part may have to be my route.

Great info though! I feel a lot better about my options.

Thanks -- Bo

You might give Rick at Offroad Boss http://offroadboss.com/ (Portland, OR) a call as he has a lot of Husaberg parts and may have something that will work on your bike. It seems like I have heard of someone here in the US who rewinds stators also.

Hi Bo,

At a guess around $25.00 USPS, unless you went UPS, then yes it does get quiet expensive. I move back to the UK in 2 weeks but generally shipping costs are the same for Europe using the regular mailing service.

Just some thing for you to think about the LC4 does have the same values as your stator but is designed to run in oppersite direction. The LC4 stator runs inverted in the ignition cover just like the later Husaberg stators from 99 to 03, as opposed to bolting direct to the engine, they are connected differently.

I can do you a rewound stator for 195.00 Uk pounds inc return shipping.

RDP501 - Thanks for the contact at Offroad Boss. I gave Rick a call and he had everything I needed and more. My parts are paid for and getting shipped. They should be here by Friday since I'm in Idaho. Your input may have just saved this bike's life.

sparks - Thanks for your help. This route just proved to be the most cost effective way. To purchase a rewind from you would have been almost as much as I paid for this bike. I'll keep you in mind, though, if I need a stator at another date.

Hopefully the next post will be of me, telling you all that this bike is perfect for what I need.

I'm glad I could be of some help. I do have a soft spot for Husabergs of that vintage as my first one was a brand-new '96 FE501 that came from Husqvarna-KTM of Gresham and I believe Rick used to work for them. He did tell me that he bought all the Husaberg parts inventory from them when they quit selling Husabergs. I do know the former owner had a lot of parts for the older models in stock, although I did not need much during the 8 years or so I had my '96 model. I do know that Rick had an ignition in stock when I needed one for a '02 FE650 I had several years ago.

Hopefully you have a manual for your bike or have downloaded one http://www.husaberg.com/Downloads.33.8.html

If you have any questions I am intimately familiar with those motors and any starting issues you may have once you get good spark. I even still have the 1996 brochure but not my service manual, although the motors didn't change much until 2001. Your bike has the same carb as did my 501 and the motors were mostly the same. Feel free to pm me if you need. I am real interested in your project!

RDP501--My "new" local dealer tried to find parts but was mostly unsuccessful. They found me an air boot from the frame to the carb, but honestly couldn't even get me a flywheel puller. I figured the problem had to do with overall experience in the field.
This past year my KTM,Husaberg, and GasGas dealer of choice closed. The owner and team were great! I believe my search locally may have been easier with their support.
I haven't owned a bike in several years do to economical issues, mainly bad decisions on my part. My prior steeds were a 2001 exc300 and a 2004 exc200. In the past month I bought this fe350 and a KTM 50 mini Adventure for my son. I can hardly wait to get on the desert!!

Where do you live in Idaho? If you are in the Boise area the place to go used to be Motosport which was owened by a guy named Bob Bosserman and he was really knowledgable about Husabergs. The flywheel puller you need is the same one that fits the older KTMs and Husqvarnas with right side ignitions.

Yes, Motosport was my dealer of choice. I hadn't been by in about a year and when I went, he was closed. There was a sign on the door with his number for motorcycle repair and maintenance, but I tried all day and never could get through. He was a very nice guy. I hope he just retired. The KTM rights went to Carl's Cycles and the Husaberg went to MotoTech.
