1996 fe350 questions

Hi everyone!

I have just obtained a 96 fe350 basket case.

The po didn't know much about the bike and said that it needed a crank. The engine has compression and kicks through with no abnormal resistance or sounds, so I'm wondering if their is a way to determine if the crank is bad without tearing it down. I should also mention that the engine is out of the frame and I am missing the front mounts so I can't bolt it back in to test it.

Any advice would be appreciated

I would start with pulling off the head and piston and see how much play you have in the crank shaft. Something that old it may be wiser to just part it out.

I tore down the top end last night. It appears that it jumped time and the piston whacked the valves.

The cylinder has some visible wear also

The crank doesn't have any perceivable up and down play, but it has a lot of slop side to side. I made a short video of it, click on the image to see it

So is any of this stuff re-usable, or is it all junk? I know the wise thing to do would be to part it, but I don't mind wrenching, so if I could get it back together without breaking the bank I'd rather do that.

Thanks!

i would say it was on the limit....if you can wobble it 3mm then yes it's time is up. do it now and just replace the pin and bearing. if it's 30mm I have plenty in stock. preventative maintenance.

also look at your little end bush, they tend to be bad on a Husaberg.

Finally got around to splitting the cases. The only other problems were the cam drive gear and the kickstart gear were missing some teeth. The transmission looks decent.

I measured the crank side to side play at .81mm by sliding feeler gauges in there. The thing that concerns me is that the rod doesn't just slide, it rocks a bit also. Is that normal?

Thanks a bunch!
